An Analysis Of Listening Comprehension Barriers In Interpretation

This thesis was about a mock consecutive interpretation of interview in 2019 Contemporary Landscape Plant Forum.Random topics,colloquial dialogues,non-native English speakers,and many factors led to prominent listening comprehension barriers of different kinds.This thesis aimed to solve the listening comprehension barriers in this interpretation from the perspective of schemas,which might be inspiring for solving other common comprehension barriers.This thesis first briefly introduced the Forum and its interview in Chapter 1.In Chapter 2 it presented the process of the mock interpretation.Then,it introduced the schema theory and its history in Chapter 3.Schemas are knowledge and recognition patterns reserved in the interpreter’s brain beforehand and are helpful in solving the problems.Next,in the same Chapter the thesis analyzed different types of barriers in the interpretation due to features of the interpretation,including unrelated,redundant,and wrong information,the lack of background information,as well as linguistic barriers involving lexical,syntactic,semantic and logic,and phonetic barriers.After analyzing the barriers,coping strategies were discussed as key parts of this thesis,which were divided into two types.Before the interpretation,the interpreter might train with specific disturbances as well as reserve linguistic and topic-related knowledge as schemas.During the interpretation,anticipation,simplification,amplification,substitution,and other methods could be adopted.The thesis was not limited to solving barriers of the Forum interview,but tried to underline their vital functions of efforts redistribution,logic explication,connotation revealing,accommodation for clients,and bridging the gap between cultures.Schemas always played a significant role in strategies implementation.Based on restored lexical,phonetic,syntactic,structural,and rhetorical knowledge,and professional knowledge about the topic,referring to schemas of previous interpretation experience and knowledge,the Interpreter could solve difficulties in the interpretation and identify the client’s real demands and hidden intentions.The thesis illustrated the application of schemas based on examples from the interview.This thesis analyzed different kinds the comprehension barriers of interpretation.It also provided useful strategies before and during the interpretation.Moreover,it underlined the importance of schemas in interpretations and also pointed out possible ways of schemas acquisition.This thesis may point out new directions of interpretation analysis.
