A Report Of English-Chinese Translation Of Through The Ivory Gate

This thesis is an English-Chinese translation report on the fiction Through the Ivory Gate.written by Rita Dove who is the 1987 winner of the Pulitzer Prize for poetry.When a woman returns to her Midwestern hometown as an artist-in-residence to teach puppetry to schoolchildren,her homecoming also means dealing with memories of racism,rej ected love and truths about her family.The author analyzes the fiction by using some methods of literary stylistic.Literary stylistics is a theory mediating between linguistics and literature.In literary stylistics,style is regarded as verbal choices in practical use;style and the stylistic effects generated by it are taken into study so as to describe and analyze the linguistic features which contribute to the expression of thematic significance and aesthetic effects and explore their literary value.This report aims to accumulate some translation methods of English fictions.There are some difficulties in translation at phonological,lexical,syntactic and discourse levels.Difficulties at phonological level involves onomatopoeia and rhyme;difficulties at lexical level involves repeated words and colloquialism;difficulties at syntactic level involves short sentences and parallelism;difficulties at discourse level involves rhetoric and dialogues.Under the guidance of the theory,the case study is made at four levels,namely phonological,lexical,syntactic and discourse levels,which makes the analysis more scientific and objective.The author to a large extent reproduces the original style mainly by adopting literal translation.The text features such as illogicalities are respectively realized by applying repeated words and paradoxical expressions.The author presents dynamic pace and casual sentences manifested in the original,and tries her best to make such rhetorical devices as simile,irony and hyperbole reproduced in the translation.What’s more,with the help of the theory of literary stylistics,the author tries to reproduce the style of the fiction Through the Ivory Gate,and explores some useful techniques for fiction translation,which may help broaden the scope of fiction translation.
