The Study On Alphonse Mucha’s Oil Painting

Alphonse Mucha,the master of the Art Nouveau,first thought of the charming women and curly plant patterns in his brushes.And few people know that Mucha transformed into a painter of history in his later years.The series of The Slav Epic is a group of large historical paintings produced by Mucha at the age of nearly 50.A total of 20 works in this series of paintings selected 20 important historical events involving war,culture,politics,religion and other fields of the Slavic nation from ancient times to the present.Mucha believed that the The Slav Epic would be a monument to all Slavic people,so he devoted almost the second half of his artistic career to this work.This article collated and interpreted the relevant documents of the The Slav Epic,and conducted a field inspection of Mucha’s works,and combined with Mucha’s oil paintings,design works and other related works of other artists.Combing the creation process and era background of The Slav Epic,and combining the era background and humanistic environment of Mucha,this paper analyzes the reasons for his transformation of artistic direction;This paper studies the process of Slavic civilization,summarizes theme of The Slav Epic,and reveals the creative thought of The Slav Epic;Starting from the theme,composition,shape and color of The Slav Epic,combined with Mucha’s poster works and illustration works,this paper discusses the relationship between the painting language of The Slav Epic and Mucha’s design language,and excavates Mucha’s inner creative ideas;At the same time,it also compares the similarities and differences between The Slav Epic and its contemporary works of art,and proves that the criticism they suffered was caused by their different positions;Finally,it summarizes the Enlightenment of the The Slav Epic series to the creation of thematic painting.It can be said that the message conveyed in The Slav Epic is the expression of the artist’s heart and the society,thought,culture and art of the times.It is not only a historical document with the significance of the times,but also reflects the characteristics of the rise of various art schools and the alternation of new and old art forms in its era.The research and analysis of The Slav Epic not only makes some supplement to the existing research of Mucha’s art works,but also fills the gap in the research of Mucha’s oil paintings.
