| The continuous promotion of the “One Belt One Road” initiative has witnessed the rising significance of the area studies.Foreign language and literature, international relations, world history, along other disciplines have all turned to this field. As an emerging international geopolitical concept, the “Indo-Pacific” is one of the key research directions of area studies, and it has received continuous attention from the academic community in recent years. This translation practice report selects the source texts with the Indo-Pacific region as the theme, hoping to provide reference for E-C geopolitical text translation. The source text of this translation report is Infrastructure,Ideas, and Strategy in the IndoPacific. The book focuses on the development and future of the Indo-Pacific,containing research articles written by scholars from different countries and regions in the Indo-Pacific.These articles are characterized by broad vision and novel perspectives, which are of theoretical and literary significance as reference for area studies. The translator selects Jef Verschueren’s Adaptation Theory as the guiding theory for this translation task. The theory claims that translation is a process in which the translator is supposed to make continuous linguistics choices and conform to target readers’ reading habits. The translator focuses on making linguistic choices, adjusting linguistic structures, and adapting between cultures based on the source text’s linguistic, social, and cultural factors.By employing the structural objects of adaptability, contextual correlates of adaptability, dynamics of adaptability, and the salience of the adaptation processes, the translator aims to give the target readers more precise information and proper reading experience.During the pre-translation process, the translator first studies the source text and familiarizes himself with related parallel texts. With the assistance of professional dictionaries and corpora, the translator establishes an English-Chinese glossary to improve the accuracy and efficiency of the translation.Specific translation methods are determined to adapt the target language based on the structural objects of adaptability, contextual correlations of adaptability, dynamics of adaptability, and the salience of the adaptation processes. The translator focuses on the essential factors and employs more appropriate and adaptive translation approaches. In the post-translation process, the translator first proofreads the target text on his own and makes further revisions and refinements according to the suggestions proposed by professionals from international relations and other fields in order to ensure the quality of the target text. This translation report includes five chapters.Chapter One briefly introduces the translated text, the significance of the translation task, and the structure of the translation report.Chapter Two describes the three stages of the translation task in detail.Chapter Three introduces Adaptation Theory and its application to the translation practice.Chapter Four presents specific cases in translation tasks based on Adaptation Theory. The translator makes linguistic choices and adaptations in accordance with the language structure and context, analyzes the source text’s expressions according to the vocabulary, syntax, discourse, and tries to achieve dynamic adaptation in the target text.Chapter Five summarizes the overall translation project, including reflections on this translation task, the limitations, and suggestions for future related research. |
