At present,the world is undergoing an unprecedented change,and the world economic map and international pattern have gone through earth-shaking changes.Great changes not only give birth to risks but also stimulate new opportunities.Against this historical background,China needs to tell the China story well by strengthening the construction of the international discourse system and comprehensively elucidating China’s philosophy on global governance as along with the relationship between China and the world.The source text of this translation report is selected from Great Changes in the World and Major-Country Diplomacy with Chinese Characteristics in the New Era,which resorts to the methods of dialectical materialism and historical materialism to examine the unprecedented changes and the historical evolution of the world pattern,involving multiple fields such as politics,economy,culture,diplomacy,and military.On the one hand,the English translation practice of this book is conducive to the foreign-oriented publicity of China’s diplomatic thinking and provides some reference for international relations studies.On the other,it is hoped to promote the construction of the international discourse system with Chinese characteristics.In this report,Relevance Theory is selected as the theoretical guide.Drawing upon Relevance Theory,translation is a double ostensive-inferential process involving the communicator(author),the translator,and the audience(target reader),in which contextual effect and processing effort play a pivotal role.The translator’s main task is to deduce reasonable contextual assumptions and reduce the reader’s processing effort after predicting readers’ cognitive expectations.In the process of translation,the translator analyzes the source text from three dimensions: word,syntax and discourse to maximize the contextual effect and achieve optimal relevance.In pre-translation,the translator sets out to prepare translation tools and make a glossary.In while-translation,the translator cogitates the choice of translation strategies and methods from lexical,syntactic and textual dimensions.At the lexical level,the translator elaborates on the semantic compensation of political words from four aspects.At the syntactic level,based on the analysis of characteristic sentence patterns,the translator infers the connotation of the source text from the ostensive information and adopts feasible strategies such as nominalization,amplification and omission,and word order adjustment.At the textual level,logical relations are sorted out from two perspectives of cohesion and coherence.The post-translation includes selfproofreading,revision from experts in international relations and feedback from the supervisor.This translation report is composed of five chapters: Chapter One describes the background,objective and significance of the report,together with an introduction to the text analysis.Chapter Two discusses the translation process,covering pretranslation,while-translation and post-translation.Chapter Three is devoted to the theoretical basis of the report,containing an overview of Relevance Theory and its application in the translation process.Chapter Four expounds on case analysis from the lexical,syntactic and textual perspectives with typical examples.Chapter Five summarizes the reflections and limitations of the current practice.
