A Case Study On The Conversion From Traditional Chinese Character To Simplified Chinese Character In Overseas Chinese Teaching At Guangming School In Jambi Province,Indonesia

Language,whether spoken or written,has a very important role,and in the teaching of Chinese as a foreign language,Chinese characters are one of the difficult aspects for students to learn,and it brings some difficulties to many learners.In view of the restoration of traditional Chinese characters,the dispute between traditional and simplified Chinese characters made the author hope to investigate with Guangming School,which used traditional Chinese characters to convert Simplified Chinese textbooks,to understand the main reasons for the school’s conversion of textbooks and the popularity of the conversion of textbooks.We hope to understand the views and needs of Indonesian learners about traditional and simplified Chinese characters,as well as the benefits brought about by the conversion of traditional and simplified Chinese characters,and hope that this survey will be helpful to the problem of traditional and simplified Chinese characters.This research mainly adopts three research methods: literature method,questionnaire survey method and interview method.The research objects are third to sixth grade students of Guangming School,three Chinese teachers,parents of second to sixth grade students,the principal,as well as vice principal of the school.The survey results show:1.The reasons for switching from traditional textbooks to simplified textbooks are:(1)From the usage situation in Indonesia,most people master simplified characters,so the conversion can facilitate the school to find a Chinese teacher.Also,learning Simplified characters also have more benefits for the cooperation between China and Indonesia.(2)From the characteristics of the font,the simplified characters have few strokes,so it is convenient for students to learn Chinese characters,and in the hope of making students interested in Chinese characters.(3)The conversion into simplified Chinese textbook content and design hopes to improve students’ oral ability.2.For the level of acceptability of Chinese teachers and parents to the school’s conversion decision,it shows that 91.23% of the students are satisfied with the decision to change from traditional to simplified,and 89.22% of the students’ parents and three Chinese teachers at the school are satisfied,70.18% of the students want to use Chinese characters more,as well as 87.25% of parents want their children to be exposed to simplified Chinese characters.Therefore,it can be seen that the conversion has a high level of acceptability.3.According to the survey,regardless of the design of the textbook or the characteristics of the font,this conversion has brought a lot of convenience to Chinese teachers and students,and it has played a very good effect.·Benefits for teachers:(1).The decision to convert to simplified characters makes it easier for Chinese teachers to make strokes.It also solves time problems,and makes it easier to teach other skills.(2)The design of the textbook provides a lot of help to the traditional teaching methods used by Chinese teachers,and the practice from textbooks is also more diverse,and the conversion is convenient for Chinese teachers to provide students with exercises.·Effects on students:(1)According to the survey,The conversion to simplified Chinese characters increased 87.72% of the students’ interest in learning Chinese characters.(2)The conversion significantly reduced the number of students with falling grades.Out of 112 students,83 students had relatively bad grades in reading and writing when using traditional characters,but after the conversion,the number decreased to 12 students.Also,from 57 students with bad grades in dictation when using traditional characters,the number became 17 students after conversion.Therefore,from this result,it can be seen that the conversion has brought many benefits to Chinese teachers and students.and the school said that it will continue to use simplified characters for teaching Chinese characters.In addition,with the conversion from traditional to simplified,the author found that the time spent in learning traditional Chinese characters does not have much impact on students adapting to or accepting simplified Chinese characters,but students with longer time learning traditional Chinese characters obviously need a longer time to adapt into using simplified characters,so the sooner to convert,the better.
