Discussion About The Dispute Of Traditional And Simplified Chinese Characters

As a kind of tool, Chinese characters itself has no sense of political and class. Since the end of Qing Dynasty, during a period of almost one hundred years, many people had criticized the China's backward to the Chinese characters, and criticized it mercilessly.Some people even wanted to abandon the Chinese characters, and rewrite Latin words, this theory of "Backwardness of Chinese"have affected reformers always.Since 1840, China was invaded and deeply oppressed by the western imperialist, gradually into a semi-colonial and semi-feudal society. Some insight began to seek the road to save their motherland. The strong political desire of Salvation and promotion made their eyes turned to characters. Compared with western developed countries, they thought it is the Chinese character which was behind, difficult to learn, intelligence difficult to open, that led to china's backward and beaten. So they all participated and proposed their suggestions, and asked for the reform of Chinese characters, go Pinyin road. In such a trend, the reformers tried many times, for example:phonetic alphabet movement, Latinized text motion, etc., but they all failed. So many people began to seek another road, which is to reduce the strokes of the Chinese characters, and use the simplified Chinese characters. There has been a large scale movement of simplification of Chinese characters since the foundation of the People's Republic of China.The publishing of "the simplification of Chinese characters plan" in 1956 had marked a period for the simplification arrivalled.After the foundation of the People's Republic of China, the simplification of Chinese characters movement had been influenced by the theory ""Backwardness of Chinese". In 1951, Chairman Mao pointed out:"The Chinese characters must be reformed and must step into the direction of pinyin which is international. So the reformers of Chinese characters only regarded the campaign of simplification of characters as a transition, not a destination, so they did not make the long-term thought. As a result, there must be some flatus in this campaign which was without being much consideration. For example, the scale of the analogous simplification in "the simplification of Chinese characters plan" is obscured, the mess of the characters sharing the same phonon, traditional and simplified characters not one-to-one, causing the difficult of computer conversion, etc. So now, some scholars proposed to restore traditional Chinese, it is justified.Since 1956, the simplified movement of Chinese characters has been over for more than half a century, people have gradually accepted simplified characters. But for Chinese characters reform, there have always been two kinds of opinions, to support and to deny. The argument toward whether the characters should be simply or not never is end. Many scholars proposed that the traditional characters should be recovered, the others also bring the view that "To write the simple character while at the same time know the traditional ones" So, as long as the simplified Chinese characters don't be abolished, and simplified controversy about Chinese discussion will not be disappear, there is someone who will restore traditional Chinese character. Throughout the process of Chinese reform movement, "the theory of "Backwardness of Chinese" throughout, the simplification of Chinese characters movement after the foundation of the People's Republic of China is not exception. So the results of the simplified Chinese characters program "The simplified Chinese characters plan" will have some problems. Aiming at these problems, this paper puts forward the view that restores traditional Chinese characters, and analyses the necessity and possibility of the view. This paper is divided into three chapters:The first chapter is Chinese reform movement. It makes a systemic and full scaled introduction about the history process of the reforms of characters since the end of Qing Dynasty. Pinyin movement and simplified Chinese characters exercise for Chinese characters reform made contributions. But the reform have faced some problems for the influence of the theory of "Backwardness of Chinese". The second chapter is Chinese simplified wrangling. It is a summery about the main views of simplified Chinese characters.The third chapter is an analysis of the necessity and feasibility of recovering the traditional Chinese characters. Based on the necessity and feasibility of recovering the traditional Chinese characters, this paper puts forward the viewpoint to reuse the traditional characters.
