After the founding of New China,a major shift in China’s academic development took place, and in the field of historiography,Marxist historiography established a dominant position. In the development of historiography in the early years of the founding of the PRC,historical newspapers and magazines played an important role in promoting it.The special issue of The History Column of Guangming Daily, with the main task of "uniting and reforming intellectuals" and sponsored by scholars with expertise in the field, became an important position for the propagation of Marxist historiography and led the development of historiography in the new China. The History Column of Guangming Daily was closely connected with politics and participated in all the historical movements after the founding of the country. The criticism of Hu Shih’s thought was a political movement initiated by the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China, and The History Column of Guangming Daily published numerous critical articles by historians against Hu Shih, which played an important role in removing the influence of bourgeois subjective materialist thought on Chinese historiography. However, this lopsided criticism violated the basic principle of seeking truth from facts. The ensuing anti-rightist movement wrongly hurt a large number of scholars and brought the situation of "a hundred schools of thought" to a standstill. In order to improve this situation,a special issue of History triggered a campaign to re-evaluate the historical figure Cao Cao,inviting many historians to publish articles and rekindle the lively situation in the The History Column of Guangming Daily by inviting different opinions to speak freely.Throughout the seventeen years of development of historiography in new China,The History Column of Guangming Daily has been closely related to it.It has led and participated in the discussion of major historical issues, triggering academic debates and social repercussions. It was the "barometer" of the development of historiography in the early years of the founding of the country. |
