A Report On The Translation Of American Massachusetts’ Jury Duty:You Make A Difference(Episodes 4,5 And 6 Of Season 2)

The jury system is an important means for America to realize judicial democracy and guarantee social fairness and justice,which is also a good reference for the improvement of China’s judicial system.Since Massachusetts’ one day,one trial jury system is relatively mature,this thesis translates the transcripts of episodes 4,5 and 6 of season 2 of the TV interview program American Massachusetts’ Jury Duty:You Make a Difference into Chinese,and writes a report on the English-Chinese translation practice.This thesis introduces the jury system,significance of the translation practice and analyzes the source text.Under the guidance of Li Kexing’s static equivalence theory,translation difficulties and strategies in the practice are analyzed from the levels of words and phrases,sentences and discourse.At the level of words and phrases,accurate translations of legal terms in the jury system,words with legal meanings,synonyms and deictic words are ensured by adopting new translations,combining with concrete contexts,consulting dictionaries and reading comparable texts.At the level of sentence,strategies such as linear translation,word order adjustment,division,addition,word class conversion and voice conversion are used in order to accurately and clearly convey the information and make the translation conform to Chinese expression habits.At the level of discourse,equivalence between the translation and the source text is achieved by retaining the format such as dialogue form,and language features such as oral expressions,slip of tongues,pauses and repetitions.It is found that static equivalence theory is applicable to the translation of legal interview transcripts and can achieve equivalence between the translation and the source text.Besides,some new translations initiated or advocated by the author’s supervisor Professor Hu Zhaoyun and other scholars are adopted in this thesis such as“决认团”,“决认员”,“威定”and“邦”,so as to improve the accuracy of the translation and provide some references for the translation of legal texts.
