| Where the Blue Begins is an absurd novel with the special setting of anthropomorphized dog society.Through the story,the author expresses his ideas about humor,religion,philosophy and life’s meaning.It can be appreciated by readers of all ages for its exciting adventures and philosophical thinking about life.This translation report aims at dealing with the difficulties such as the reproduction of the particular setting of the dog-centered world during the translation of the first eight chapters of Where the Blue Begins under the guidance of Eco-Translatology.Eco-Translatology is based on the approach of translation as adaptation and selection,combining ecology with translatology from a holistic viewpoint.It lays special emphasis on textual ecologies,translational eco-environments,"translational community" ecologies as well as their interactions with each other.It provides translators with the three-dimensional transformation,including linguistic,cultural,and communicative dimensions to keep a balance between two languages.With the guidance of Eco-Translatology,the translator reproduces the unique settings and the personalities of special characters by adapting to the eco-environments and textual ecologies.In the linguistic dimension,the translator makes adaptive selections among translation techniques to deal with words,sentences and grammars according to the differences between the two languages.In the cultural dimension,the translator adds explanatory words to the culture-related content to reproduce the cultural settings of the story.In the communicative dimension,the translator rewrites the plots without equivalent content in Chinese.To avoid ambiguity and reproduce the personalities of special characters,the translator makes modifications in descriptions and dialogues.The translation practice is completed to provide good reading materials for Chinese people while achieving cultural communication between the two languages. |
