A Report On The E-C Translation Of An Excerpt From American Images Of China:Identity,Power,Policy

Nowadays,with China’s comprehensive national strength increasing worldwide,the development of Sino-US relations has attracted more attention and has become an important research area.We have a lot of research data on China and the United States,but there is not much relevant information about China in the view of the United States.Therefore,translating relevant materials can help us understand how Americans view China and understand the development of Sino-US relations from another angle.The author selects the fourth chapter of American Images of China:Identity,Power,Policy(Oliver,2014)as the translation target.The entire chapter reviews the decades of Sino-US history,and analyzes the underlying reasons for the development of Sino-US relations based on relevant historical facts.This thesis includes five chapters in all.The first part begins with the translation task.It briefly introduces its background and significance,analyzes the source text,and discusses the preparation before translation.The second part describes the whole translation activity,including the pre-translation preparation,translation process and proofreading.The third part is a theoretical introduction.It mainly summarizes"Steiner’s four-step method of translation" under the theory of hermeneutic translation,and analyzes its applicability and translation principles.The fourth part concerns case analysis of the translation,which is also the focus of this report.Guided by Steiner’s translation theory,the author analyzes the application of translation strategies through examples.The last part is the conclusion,in which the author summarizes the main findings and deficiencies in this practice.This report takes Steiner’s translation theory as the practical guide.According to the specific four translation steps,the application of "trust","aggression","incorporation" and "restitution" is embodied via examples.On the one hand,the author flexibly adopts the techniques of turning abstraction into concreteness,amplification and omission,word conversion,and Chinese four-character structure to ensure accurate and faithful expression.In a large part,splitting and recasting can help conquer the obstacle caused by the differences in the bilingual structure between English and Chinese.In addition,since the text is mainly about the historical process of China and the United States,especially in the tense stage of Sino-US relations,there are some exclusionary and discriminatory languages.When it comes to the sensitive information,it is necessary to maintain a firm political position and adopt appropriate translation strategies to deal with the relevant information on the premise of political correctness.According to the analysis of this report,Steiner’s translation theory can effectively provide theoretical basis and guidance for the translation of historical texts.According to Steiner’s four steps of translation,the flexible use of translation strategies can effectively improve the quality of the translation under standardized standards.
