Based on newspapers and related historical materials,this article explores the historical status and lessons learned from the anti-opium movement organized by the Overseas Chinese in the Straits Settlements in the first half of the 20th century,and build a picture of the Overseas Chinese participation in social undertakings through the anti-opium movement.This article introduces the history of opium poisoning Chinese society in the Straits Settlements and discusses the process of the the anti-opium movement organized by the Overseas Chinese in the Straits Settlements.Early antiopium movement by the Overseas Chinese were influenced by the anti-opium movement in their homeland and the recent nationalism.They organized Chinese antiopium organizations and anti-opium movement conferences to make appeals.They contacted British anti-opium forces to put pressure on them and promoted the process of opium policy transformation in the Straits Settlements.In the 1920s and 1930s,the international anti-opium issue intensified again.Stimulated by the Opium Investigation Team of the Far East and supported by Chinese official and civil forces,the anti-opium campaign became a social issue for the Straits Chinese again.The Singapore AntiOpium Association was born as a anti-opium movement leading organ.In addition,in order to counter Japan’s poisoning policy,expand its influence among overseas Chinese,and arouse the nationalist identity deep in the hearts of Overseas Chinese,the Kuomintang government also launched overseas anti-opium movements in the 1930s,which became an important part of the Chinese nti-opium movement.In general,the movement is not a failed movement.It is an outstanding attempt of the modern transformation of the Overseas Chinese social movement,which strengthens the emotional connection between the Chinese society of the Straits Statements and the home country,and promotes the thinking of the Chinese living conditions in the Straits Statements.
