A Study On The English Translation Of Polysemous Words In Shang Han Lun From The Perspective Of Frame Semantics

Shang Han Lun is a classic work of traditional Chinese medicine,written by Zhang Zhongjing,a physician of the Eastern Han Dynasty,and has important influence in the history of traditional Chinese medicine.However,the classic is written for a long time,and linguistic phenomena such as obscure speech and polysemous words are widespread,which seriously hinders the dissemination of academic ideas of Shang Han Lun.Therefore,the study of the polysemous words in Shang Han Lun is conducive to a comprehensive understanding of the ideological connotation of Shang Han Lun and promotes the inheritance and dissemination of Shang Han Lun.This research first uses the literature analysis method to review the research on the English translation of Shang Han Lun and the research on polysemy in Chinese medicine classics,and finds that the phenomenon of polysemy exists in a large number of Chinese medicine classics,but the academic community does not pay much attention to it,and the relevant research mainly focuses on Chinese medicine classics such as The Inner Canon of the Yellow Emperor and Shang Han Lun.Among the two TCM classics that are relatively concentrated,the literature related to polysemy research is also very limited.As one of the research paradigms of cognitive linguistics,frame semantics believes that the acquisition of linguistic meaning is a process of understanding,The translator first uses the original language as a clue to activate the relevant cognitive frame in the brain,and then fully considers the knowledge system of the translated reader,predicts the cognitive frame of the translated reader,and adopts different translation strategies according to the difference between the source language and the cognitive frame of the translated language.The frame semantic theory comprehensively considers individual experience and knowledge background from the perspective of cognition,provides a scientific theoretical perspective for the translation of polysemous words,and has certain theoretical advantages in the study of the phenomenon of polysemous words.Through literature analysis,the author found that few scholars have studied the English translation of polysemous words in Chinese texts from the perspective of frame semantic theory.Therefore,it is necessary and innovative to study the English translation of polysemous words of Shang Han Lun through frame semantic theory.The number of polysemous words selected in this study was 22,which were classified into bisemy words,trisemy words and polysemy words according to their number of meanings in Shang Han Lun.The author carefully compares the application scenarios and meanings of various polysemy words in Shang Han Lun,and extracts the frame activated by understanding the meaning of words into the TCM frameworks such as organ domain,etiology domain,symptom domain,treatment domain,drug name domain and other general frameworks(non-TCM)such as the action domain,time domain,natural domain,and character domain according to their application scenarios and meanings.Combined with the Shang Han Lun translated by Luo Xiwen,the translation process of polysemy is analyzed,and the translation strategy of polysemy of Shang Han Lun from the perspective of frame semantic theory is discussed,and then the equivalent translation method under idealized framework transformation,and the method of additive translation and transliteration annotation under non-idealized framework transformation are proposed.Studies have confirmed that the frame of most of the polysemy terms in Shang Han Lun,which has the same cognitive basis in the source language and the translated language,belongs to idealized frame transformation.Frame equivalent conversion can be done directly,reflecting the commonality of human cognition.In the case of frame equivalence,the translation of polysemy can be done equivalently.Due to the particularity of Chinese medicine culture,some typical Chinese medicine meanings,such as pathogenesis,diseases,etc.,cannot find an equivalent cognitive frame in the translated language,that is,nonidealized frame transformation,in this case,the translator has to make additional explanations to help the reader understand the translated language.In short,studying the English translation of polysemy words of Shang Han Lun from the cognitive perspective has certain practical significance for enriching the translation theory of TCM and guiding the practice of TCM translation.
