Traditional Chinese Medicine(TCM)culture is one of the excellent traditional cultures that the Chinese nation has been exploring and accumulating for thousands of years.TCM classics carry rich knowledge of TCM culture and profound connotation of Chinese culture, and the translation of TCM classics is one of the important ways to realize the going global of TCM culture. In view of the tremendous cultural differences between different countries,it is critical to convey the unique cultural connotations of TCM culturally-loaded words accurately while handling the language form transformation in English translation of TCM classics. This paper chooses the English translation of culturally-loaded words in Huangdi’s Canon of Medicine as the starting point for the study.Huangdi’s Canon of Medicine,as a masterpiece of TCM classics,is widely spread overseas. And at the same time,it has laid the theoretical foundation of TCM,which also contains profound cultural connotations, philosophy and religion, and other aspects of content.Medio-translatology is a cross-cultural study of literary translation from the perspective of comparative literature. The research scope of Medio-translatology is not only limited to linguistic aspect, but also inclined to literature and culture. The addition, loss and transformation of cultural information in the original text in the process of language conversion are main research directions of Medio-translatology.Up to now,the applicability of Medio-translatology has become more extensive and has been extended to all disciplines related to cross-language and cross-culture.Cultural imagery refers to the image symbol condensing ethnic characteristics, which bears different living environment, cultural customs and cultural psychology of different ethnic groups. It is produced through historical accumulation and has relatively fixed and exclusive cultural connotations. In view of the great differences in cultural backgrounds carried by different languages, the loss of cultural images in the process of translation may make languages obscure, dilute the original appearance of cultural terms, and even make them lose their original cultural characteristics. Therefore, exploring and analyzing the cultural images in the English translation of culturally-loaded words in Huangdi’s Canon of Medicine may provide valuable reference for promoting the English translation of TCM classics and the international communication of TCM culture.By using methods of data studies and interdisciplinary perspectives, the author makes an overall grasp of the research situation of English translation of culturally-loaded words in Huangdi’s Canon of Medicine.By analyzing the advantages and disadvantages of the research in this field, this study found that the current research mostly takes the typical culturally-loaded words in some chapters of Huangdi’s Canon of Medicine as an example, focusing on the strategy research at the language level.Based on the existing research, this paper aims to explore the influencing factors of cultural information loss and deformation, and analyze the restrictive factors of cross-cultural translation from the cultural level.According to Eugene A.Nida’s classification theory of cultural elements in translation, the culturally-loaded words in the first 34 chapters of Huangdi’s Canon of Medicine are classified according to the social and ecological terms, the professional TCM terms and the philosophical and religious terms.Taking Ilza Veith’s English version and Li Zhaoguo’s English version as examples, this paper selects the differences between the two versions and analyzes the cultural image behind the culturally-loaded words.Based on a case study of the loss of cultural images, the addition of cultural images, the expansion of cultural images and the deformation of cultural images, this paper discusses and summarizes the influencing factors of information loss and deformation in English translation, such as the original author’s unconsciously neglect, the translator’s undiversified translation methods, and the translator’s insufficient understanding of the cultural information of the source language and the target language. It helps inspire researchers to view the influence of cultural differences and other factors in translation activities from a more neutral and positive perspective. With a view to enriching the theoretical and practical research of TCM translation, this paper aims to provide a new translation perspective and broaden the research thinking for the English translation of culturally-loaded words of TCM.In the meanwhile,it offers new inspiration and entry points for interpreting cultural differences and exploring more reasonable and effective cultural communication paths and methods, and provides a valuable reference for promoting the research on the English translation of culturally-loaded words of TCM and accelerating the process of international communication of TCM culture.
