ObjectiveTo understand the current status of pediatric nurses’ work stressors, coping styles and patient safety competencies status of pediatric nurses.Analyze the factors influencing patient safety competency. To explore the correlation among work stressors, coping strategies and patient safety competency and build a path analysis model among the three.MethodsThis study is a cross-sectional study, using the convenience sampling method, selecting pediatric nurses working in four tertiary hospitals at Hohhot from April 2022 to August 2022 as the research objects.Conducting questionnaire surveys, and finally analyzing 281 questionnaires. The survey tools included general information questionnaire,Chinese Nurse Stressor Scale,Coping Styles Questionnaire,Patient Safety Competency Self-rating Scale of Nurses. The original data was entered into Excel software, and SPSS 25.0 and AMOS 24.0software were used for data analysis.Descriptive statistics are expresses as(x ±s).The comparison between two groups of variables is analyzed in two independent sample t-tests,and the comparison between multiple groups is analyzed in a one-way ANOVA.Pearson correlation analysis is used to patient safety competency and work pressure of pediatric nurses and their Correlation among coping styles.Multiple linear regression analysis is used to identify the influencing factors of nurses’ patient safety competence, and the AMOS structural equation model was used to validate the mediating effect of coping strategies between job stress and patient safety competence in pediatric nurses.Results1.General data shows that there are 39 nurses, accounting for 13.9%,158 nursing instructors, accounting for 56.2%,68 senior nursing instructors, accounting for 24.2%,13 deputy chief nursing instructors, accounting for 4.6%,and 3 chief nursing instructors, accounting for 1.1%.Only 50 people have a formal employment relationship with the unit, accounting for 17.8%,while 231 nurses are on a contract basis, accounting for 82.2%.Among all survey participants,212 people received patient safety related knowledge training, accounting for 75.4%,while only 69 people did not, accounting for 24.6%.2.The total competence score of pediatric nurses in patient safety is(115.70±15.02),and the overall average score is(3.98±0.51).The scores for each dimension, from highest to lowest, are attitude factors(4.20±0.58),systematic factors(4.15±0.61),knowledge factors(3.85±0.58),and skill factors(3.78±0.60).The total score for work pressure is(85.60±21.41),with an overall average score of(2.45±0.61).The scores for each dimension, from highest to lowest, are workload and time allocation(2.69±0.80),nursing professional knowledge and practice(2.62±0.64),patient care(2.56±0.64),management and interpersonal(2.22±0.76),and work environment and resources(1.89±0.84).The scores for positive and negative coping dimensions of pediatric nurses are(32.14±7.04)and(29.45±6.50).3.Univariate analysis shows that the competency score of pediatric nurses in patient safety has statistically significant differences in job title, residence, employment relationship with the unit, whether they received patient safety training, number of night shifts per month, and hospital(P<0.05).The work pressure score of pediatric nurses has statistically significant differences in age, years of nursing experience, job title, marital status, number of night shifts per month, and department(P<0.05).The multiple linear regression analysis shows that the job title, whether they received patient safety training, employment relationship with the unit, and number of night shifts per month are influential factors for pediatric nurses’ competence in patient safety(P<0.05).4.The Pearson correlation analysis shows that work pressure is a negative predictor of pediatric nurses’ competence in patient safety(r=-0.275,P<0.01).Positive coping is positively correlated with competence in patient safety, while negative coping is negatively correlated with competence in patient safety.5.The structural equation model shows that work pressure can directly negatively predict nurses’ competence in patient safety, with an effect size of-0.196.Negative coping has a direct negative effect on competence in patient safety, with an effect size of-0.127;positive coping has a direct positive effect on competence in patient safety, with an effect size of 0.352.Conclusion1.The patient safety competency of pediatric nurses is at a moderately high level, and they are relatively deficient in knowledge and skill factors, and need to continue to learn and strengthen, and the attitude factor scores the highest. The work pressure of pediatric nurses is at a medium level. The main pressure comes from heavy workload, overtime work and overload work. The lowest score is the dimension of work environment and resources.Pediatric nurses tend to respond positively to difficulties and unhappiness.2.There is a negative correlation between the competence of pediatric nurses in patient safety and their work pressure, negatively correlated with work stress, negatively correlated with negative coping, and positively correlated with positive coping. That is,the higher the work pressure, the more likely pediatric nurses are to adopt negative coping strategies, and their competence in patient safety will be lower. When work pressure is low, pediatric nurses tend to choose positive coping strategies, and their competence in patient safety will be higher.3.Pediatric nurses’ work pressure and negative coping strategies can negatively predict their competency in patient safety.Positive coping strategies have a direct and positive effect on the competence of pediatric nurses in patient safety, and coping strategies play a partially mediating role between their work pressure and the competence in patient safety.4.In hospital management, the stress level of pediatric nurses should be reduced as much as possible, the sources of stress should be reduced, and pediatric nurses should be encouraged to adopt positive coping methods, which will have a positive effect on enhancing their patient safety competence.
