| Objective: Academic procrastination is a common problem among college students, and compared with non-medical students, medical students are more likely to suffer from academic procrastination, which has a series of negative effects. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to investigate the current situation of academic procrastination among medical undergraduates;explores the factors that may affect medical students’ academic procrastination;explores the influencing mechanism between perceptive social support, academic self-efficacy,intrinsic learning motivation and academic procrastination;explores the mediating role of academic self-efficacy and intrinsic learning motivation in understanding the relationship between perceptive social support and academic procrastination, and constructs a theoretical model,in order to put forward specific countermeasures and suggestions to reduce medical students’ academic procrastination behavior. Methods: This study randomly selected 970 students from 33 classes in a medical college in Liaoning province through stratified cluster random sampling. In this study, medical students’ general status questionnaire,Academic Procrastination Scale(PASS),Multidimensional Perceptive Social Support Scale(MSPSS),academic self-efficacy questionnaire and Working Preference Inventory(WPI)are used for questionnaire survey.Mean ± standard deviation was used to describe the scores of perceptive social support, intrinsic learning motivation, academic self-efficacy and academic procrastination of medical students;t-test and ANOVA were used to analyze the demographic differences of medical students’ academic procrastination, and the least significant difference method was used for post-hoc comparison between groups.Pearson correlation analysis was used to analyze the pairwise correlation between academic procrastination and perceived social support, academic self-efficacy and intrinsic learning motivation of medical students.Use Hierarchical regression analysis to analyze the relationship and influence of intrinsic learning motivation, academic self-efficacy,perceived social support and academic procrastination among medical students. The mediating effects of intrinsic learning motivation and academic self-efficacy on the perceived social support and academic procrastination were analyzed by PROCESS 3.3 software.Amos 25.0 software was used to establish a model to further verify the chain mediating roles of intrinsic learning motivation and academic self-efficacy in understanding the relationship between perceived social support and academic procrastination. Results: The reliability of the Multidimensional Perceptive Social Support Scale(MSPSS),academic self-efficacy questionnaire,Working Preference Inventory(WPI)and Academic Procrastination Scale(PASS)ranged from 0.818 to 0.929.The procrastination rate of medical students was 23.6%.The procrastination rates of the six academic tasks from low to high are: attendance task(14.1%),academic management task(17.0%),academic task(21.4%),writing papers or assignments(23.8%),review for examination(25.3%),and general school behavior(32.9%).As a result of the single factor analysis, there is a remarkable difference in the academic procrastination between medical students who differ from grade to major(P<0.05).As a results of correlation analysis, the perceived social support, intrinsic learning motivation and academic self-efficacy of medical students showed negative correlation with academic procrastination(r=-0.230,r=-0.205,r=-0.313,all P<0.01),perceived social support and intrinsic learning motivation showed positive correlation with academic self-efficacy of medical students(r=0.394,r=0.533,all P<0.01),and perceived social support showed positive correlation with intrinsic learning motivation of medical students(r=0.253,P<0.01).The results of regression analysis and structural equation model showed that academic self-efficacy played a partial mediating role between medical students’ perceived social support and academic procrastination, and the Bootstrap 95%CI was(-0.096,-0.040).Intrinsic learning motivation and academic self-efficacy played a chain mediating role, and the Bootstrap 95%CI was(-0.048,-0.014).The direct effect and the mediating effect accounted for 53.48% and 46.52% of the total effect, respectively. Conclusion: The overall academic procrastination rate of medical students in this study was 23.6%,among which the highest degree of procrastination was found in their general school behavior. The academic procrastination of medical students varies significantly in terms of grade and major.Perceived social support, intrinsic learning motivation and academic self-efficacy may be important factors affecting medical students’ academic procrastination.Betweent the perceived social support and academic procrastination of medical students, academic self-efficacy plays a partial mediating role, intrinsic learning motivation and academic self-efficacy play a chain mediating role. This conclusion will provide reference for the training of medical students at this stage, and put forward reasonable suggestions for effectively reducing the academic procrastination of medical college students in the future. |
