The average lifespan of companion canines has significantly increased due to advancements in small animal veterinary medicine and increased public knowledge of scientific pet ownership, which has led to an increase in the number of geriatric illnesses being treated. The most prevalent elderly illness, tumors can develop in any tissue or part of the animal body. Some malignant tumors are extremely invasive and metastatic, endangering the health and quality of life of companion canines. The rate of tumor detection has steadily risen due to the advancement of tumor diagnostic technology, but there are few studies on the epidemiology of canine tumors in China, making it challenging to give clinical veterinarians advice and support. In this study,425 canine tumor cases admitted to three veterinary hospitals in Wuhan between 2019 and 2022 were gathered through clinical treatment and case review. All tumors were then classified into six categories: tumors of the reproductive system, skin, digestive system, urinary system, ocular system, and other tumors. The relationship between each type of canine tumor and the age, sex, and breed of dogs was then analyzed through statistical medical history information.Through statistical analysis of historical data,we examined the connection between each type of tumor and the age, sex, and species of canines and examined the prevalence pattern of canine tumors in Wuhan.About 3% of all canine tumors are oral tumors, but due to the position of these tumors, they frequently come with clinical signs like dysphagia and decreased appetite, which have a significant impact on the afflicted canines’ quality of life. The most common form of treatment for oral tumors is surgical resection, but because of the tumor’s unique anatomical location and the oral cavity’s abundant blood supply,it is challenging to completely remove the tumor while preserving the animal’s tissue structure as much as possible.Additionally, the dog experiences pain in the operated area during the healing process, which makes it difficult for the dog to eat. There aren’t many clinical observational studies on cryoablation,a technique for treating tumors that makes use of the various properties of heat absorption and heat release during the expansion of argon and helium. It has excellent effectiveness for treating oral tumors as well.To investigate the therapeutic effect of cryoablation on the oral cavity in comparison to surgery and to determine whether cryoablation could increase the survival time of dogs with oral tumors,we followed 25 cases of canine oral tumors treated with cryoablation and 12 cases treated with surgery. The main findings and conclusions of the study are as follows:(1)There were a total of 54,59,140,and 172 canine tumor cases seen in the three veterinary hospitals in Wuhan in 2019,2020,2021,and 2022,respectively;the percentage of canine tumor cases among all dogs seen increased from 2.12% in 2019 to 4.76% in 2022;both the incidence and number of canine tumor cases both showed an annual trend of growth;(2)Tumors of the reproductive system and skin tumors were the most common tumors in canines,at 40.24% and 38.35%,respectively;(3)The mean age of the 425 canine tumor cases included in this study was 7.98 years, with a high prevalence age range of 6 to 11 years, and the mean age of dogs with tumorigenic disease at the time of consultation in 2019 was 6.38 years, while by 2022 this figure was 8.27 years, with an increasing trend in the age of dogs with tumors;(4)There were 34 breeds of dogs overall among the 425 cases of canine tumors,with127 cases of Poodles accounting for the highest proportion,29.88%,followed by 64 cases of Golden Retriever,15.06%,and 46 cases of Chinese Field Dogs,10.82%;other breeds of dogs were rarer, accounting for less than 5% of the cases;(5)In this study, there were 246 cases of tumors in female dogs, including 152 cases of tumors of the reproductive system, accounting for 61.79% of the tumor cases in female dogs;there were differences in the types of tumors that were more common in male and female dogs;there were 179 cases of tumors in male dogs, including 109 cases of skin and soft tissue tumors, accounting for 59.22% of the cases in male dogs;(6)The median survival time for 25 cases of oral tumors treated with cryoablation was987 days, while the median survival time for 12 cases treated with surgical excision was 513 days. This data suggests that cryoablation can extend the survival time of canines with oral tumors.
