Fragmentation of cultivated land in China has a long history and is one of the main factors restricting agricultural development.Compared with developed countries, the problem of cultivated land fragmentation in China is more prominent, the ridge between farmland occupies 3%-10% of the effective area of cultivated land, resulting in the waste of land resources and tillage input elements. The implementation of the household contract responsibility system has aroused the enthusiasm of farmers and improved the efficiency of agricultural production, but due to the large number of people and the lack of land and the implementation of the inheritance system, the nationwide arable land tends to be more dispersed.Agricultural modernization is an inevitable trend of agricultural history. In order to increase the area of cultivated land, improve the quality of cultivated land, promote the modernization of agriculture and the development of agricultural economy,it is necessary to carry out the regulation of cultivated land fragmentation. It is very important to study the characteristics and driving forces of arable land fragmentation, land consolidation approaches and their effects in typical areas.Taking Xuwen County,Zhanjiang City,Guangdong Province as an example, this study used landscape pattern analysis, index evaluation method and analytic hierarchy process to quantify the characteristics of cultivated land fragmentation in the study area.According to the characteristics of cultivated land fragmentation, the study area was divided into different areas and different consolidation measures were taken.Land consolidation projects, such as land leveling, land ownership merging and infrastructure construction, were carried out in the study area, and the benefits of consolidation were comprehensively evaluated. To explore the ecological, economic and social benefits of land consolidation before and after land consolidation and to evaluate the indicators after land consolidation. The main research conclusions are as follows:(1)The problem of land fragmentation in the study area is serious. The scattered plots of farmland of the same household and the small area of a single plot are prominent problems. Moreover, the infrastructure construction such as roads and ditches in the plots is not perfect enough, leading to the poor overall production conditions of the plots and the failure to give full play to their production potential.Due to the aging of the population structure, the young population goes out to work, and the labor ability decreases, and the cultivated land is changed to eucalyptus or abandoned, which leads to the decline of the quality of cultivated land and the decrease of land efficiency..(2)Based on the characteristics of cultivated land fragmentation in the study area, this study put forward the key objects and contents of land consolidation and carried out land consolidation projects according to local conditions. After the implementation of the land remediation project,a landscape pattern of "field into square, road into frame, canal into network, tree into line" was formed in the study area, and the ratio of land cover area of ridge decreased from 9.6% to 1.2%,The original 1189 plots were reduced to 343 plots, and the average patch area was increased from 0.0133 hm~2 to 0.3347 hm~2.Among them, the ridge area decreased from 12.73hm~2 to 1.61hm~2,and the ridge area decreased about 11.12hm~2,which improved the effective arable land area of farmers in the study area.36.59% of farmers’ land plots with a total area of about 64.50% reached a comprehensive evaluation value of more than 0.95,and about 94% of the land plots met the requirements of suitable mechanization construction, which greatly increased the effective arable land area in the study area. After remediation, farmers’ agricultural production conditions have been qualitatively improved.More than 95% of the farmland is suitable for mechanized farming, which effectively improves farmers’ farming efficiency and reduces farmers’ farming time. The land income of farmers has been greatly improved, with the income rising from RMB 2,200 / year to 7,200 / year, which has aroused the enthusiasm of farmers in production and improved the land use efficiency. The harmonious coexistence of human and cultivated land promotes the development of each other and improves the ecological protection function of local cultivated land.Farmers’ daily lives were liberated and they could devote themselves to more recreational activities, which deepened the relationship between the neighbors. The regulation of farmland fragmentation has brought many ecological and social benefits.(3)Considering the real needs of farmers for remediation, this study conducted questionnaire and interview analysis, which could better carry out targeted land consolidation and improve farmers’ satisfaction with remediation projects. However,as the problem of cultivated land fragmentation varies from place to place and has a profound relationship with local history and culture, further research is needed to determine whether the results of this study can be applied to other regions.
