After China’s urban planning entered the era of stock planning, the spatial shift from incremental to stock has gradually brought attention to the informal development and informal spaces that emerged along with the rough urban expansion in the past rapid urbanization phase. The spatial space of the Chang’an City site, which is mostly located in the suburbs and countryside,is also being squeezed by the expansion of urban space, and informal development and livelihood conflicts are also found within the spatial resources of large sites. As the site of Chang’an City site, which has been used for the longest time in ancient China, has the most number of capital dynasties, and has the richest relics, its conservation and utilization has always been an important task in the urban development and construction of Xi’an.Faced with the threat to cultural relics safety and ecological disturbance caused by informality and informal space, the investigation and spatial management of informal space in villages in the Chang’an City site area has become one of the urgent concerns of the Chang’an City site area and Xi’an.In view of this, this paper takes the informal space of the village in the Chang’an City site area as the research object, and uses the informal space as the starting point for the study of space and conservation and utilization in the Chang’an City site area, and analyzes and summarizes the current situation, characteristics and production mechanism of the informal space in the village in the Chang’an City site area.Based on the current situation of informal space and its problems, the study attempts to propose a strategy for the governance of informal space in the Chang’an City site area,in the hope of promoting the spatial transformation and development of the Chang’an City site area through the renewal and optimization of the stock of informal material space, and constructing an institutional space for the governance of informal space in the villages of the site to complement the long-term guidance. The main conclusions of the study are as follows:(1)Informality exists in the villages of the Chang’an City site area.Among them, the non-correspondence between land use and building use as the conflict between perceived space and abstract space becomes the basis for the objective existence of informal space. The current informal space in the villages of the Chang’an City site area covers an area of 10.88 km~2,and the informal space directly superimposed on the remains is about 0.41 km~2.(2)The informal space in the Chang’an City site area is characterized by alienation, pluralism and multi-tracking in terms of material space, carrying social relations and involving power structures,respectively.(3)The current characteristics and production of informal space in the Chang’an City site area are jointly promoted by power, capital and social subjects in the top-down and bottom-up processes. At the same time, each spatial subject has a stage absence in the production process.(4)Through the mechanism of informal space production in the Chang’an City site area,it is proposed that the production and living needs of village residents in the site area are the original driving force of informal space production, the capitalization of space is the endogenous drive, and the dynamic and flexible regulation of power subjects in the site area is the external motive force.Informal space production and reproduction in the site area cannot be avoided and eliminated.(5)Therefore,driven by the current problems and production mechanisms of informal spaces in the site villages, this paper investigates the governance strategy of informal spaces in the Chang’an City site from two levels:"space"and"governance",and constructs a long-term mechanism to guide and restrain informal spaces in the Chang’an City site area. This paper not only establishes a long-term mechanism to guide and restrain informal spaces in the Chang’an City site area, but also provides adaptive guidance for informal space management practices in the light of the current situation.
