Throughout thousands of years of development,China’s ancient towns have formed unique regional cultures, which in turn influence people’s lives and manifest in the construction of these towns. The landscape, characterized by its ornamental, participatory, and display elements, serves as a crucial carrier for expressing regional culture in ancient towns while also playing a vital role in preserving this culture. However, with the rapid development of urbanization and tourism in China, ancient town landscapes are confronting numerous challenges, such as homogenization, urbanization, and fragmentation. It has become increasingly urgent to seek sustainable development solutions.Enhancing the expression of regional culture in ancient town landscape design, increasing the uniqueness of these landscapes, and fostering the inheritance and innovation of regional culture are now essential topics in the development of ancient towns.First, this study examines the relevant theories of regional culture and ancient town landscapes, analyzing the constituent elements of regional culture and ancient town landscapes.Meanwhile, through field research on Chenlu Ancient Town and case studies both domestically and internationally, the expression of regional culture in ancient town landscapes is analyzed,as well as the common issues in current ancient town landscape design.Next, the design methods of regional culture in ancient town landscapes are summarized, and a design framework for ancient town landscapes from the perspective of regional culture is established to address the practical problems faced in ancient town landscapes. Finally, the regional culture of Chenlu Ancient Town is analyzed, and the application of regional culture in the spatial layout, architectural construction, road pavement, public facilities, and vegetation greening of Chenlu Ancient Town is summarized.Suggestions for optimization are proposed to address the shortcomings in the landscape design of Chenlu Ancient Town. The main research content and findings of this study are as follows:(1)In conjunction with relevant landscape design theories, this study proposes principles and methods for ancient town landscape design from a regional culture perspective. It delves into regional culture through both tangible and intangible elements, adhering to principles such as protection priority and cultural locality. The study expresses regional culture using various techniques, including landscape preservation, landscape reproduction, and artistic conception.Additionally, regional culture is integrated into the design of public spaces, ancient town architecture, road paving, landscape elements, and vegetation in the ancient town.(2)The study summarizes the regional culture and values of Chenlu Ancient Town, providing a comprehensive analysis of the manifestation and application of regional culture within the town’s landscape.(3)Taking the optimization and protection of Chenlu Ancient Town’s landscape as an example, this study applies the proposed design principles and methods in practice.Based on fundamental research and detailed analysis,it offers corresponding optimization and improvement suggestions for the newly established spatial landscape nodes in Chenlu Ancient Town.Furthermore, the study proposes protection strategies for both tangible and intangible landscapes with strong regional cultural characteristics, aiming to enhance the inheritance of regional culture within the landscape. This paper conducts in-depth research on ancient town landscape design from a regional culture perspective, summarizing and outlining the methods for regional culture-based ancient town landscape design, and exploring their application in real-world cases. This study holds significant reference value for future ancient town landscape design and practice.
