Matthew Nowickis Design Ideas,Educational Ideas And Works From The Perspective Of Humanism

This article is a special study on modernist architect Matthew Nowicki(1910-1950).The research content includes three parts: design thinking,educational philosophy and architectural works.In Nowicki’s short but wonderful life,he left brilliant architectural achievements.He traced modernism back to the humanism of the Renaissance,put forward a design method that returns to people,and infiltrated the humanistic thought into the architectural ontology,so as to solve the problem of international stereotyped style;Functional issues are studied as well.When people were anxious about the development of modern architecture after the war,Nowicki seemed to be a pioneer,pointing out a new direction for the development of modern architecture.This paper takes Nowicki’s articles and related literature as the main research object,and systematically analyzes Nowicki’s architectural achievements from five aspects:theoretical background,design ideas,educational concepts,architectural works and impact significance.This paper proposes that the main architectural achievements of Nowicki mainly include the following three points: At the level of design thinking,the core idea of Nowicki’s design concept is its humanism-the attention to detail based on human scale and human behavior.On this basis,Nowicki proposed a dynamic and predictable view of structure and material,showing his optimistic attitude towards the development of architecture under technological progress.In terms of educational concepts,based on years of architectural practice experience,Nowicki advocates adding humanities and history courses to the architectural education system to broaden students’ knowledge and guide students to pay attention to factors such as site response,material technology,and user habits during the design process.Make it create buildings that satisfy the physical and human environment,so as to cultivate the sense of social responsibility of architecture students.At the level of architectural works,Nowicki has experienced a process from imitation to transcendence.Under the influence of modernist ideas,Nowicki practiced the urban planning concept of traffic diversion,explored a new architectural structure-the saddle-shaped suspension cable structure,and used the structure as an expression of architectural form,opening up a new way for the diversified construction of forms.a new way.After research,this paper draws the following conclusions: under the background of architectural history,the humanistic view in Nowicki design thought breaks through the shackles of international styles and provides a new source for the diversity of architectural forms;the structural expression in architectural works inspires A large number of architects such as Eero Saarinen,Philip Johnson,Paul Rudolph,etc.have pointed out the direction for the diversified development of modern architectural structures;in addition,Nowicki’s educational philosophy based on humanities and history is still important to the current architectural education.It is instructive.Nowicki has not appeared in the history of architecture for a long time,but his thoughts have continued to spread far in the history of architecture.It can be said that Nowicki occupies a pivotal position in the development of modern architecture,and played a vital role in the subsequent development.The research content and results of this paper have certain reference value for clarifying the relationship between humanism,structure and form in modern architecture,and have certain reference significance for the new direction of current architectural development.
