With the arrival of the knowledge-based economy era, higher education faces new challenges and opportunities. In order to comprehensively cultivate talent, some universities have begun to explore new talent training models, including the "college system" model. This model emphasizes the integration of general education and professional education, focuses on interaction and communication between mentors and students, and provides a good learning and living environment. It is a powerful way to cultivate new era compound talents. The inspiration for the "college system" education model currently adopted in China comes from the Western "college system" model. It aims to cultivate students’ comprehensive development ability, while inheriting the excellent cultural spirit of ancient Chinese academies, and focusing on students’ moral and psychological development. Many experts and scholars believe that the "college system" education model will become the main direction of future education reform. In the implementation of the "college system" model, student apartments are an important component. The planning and design of public spaces are crucial for students’ living and learning environment. However, student apartments face some problems and challenges, including improper management, inadequate functional configuration of public spaces, and insufficient service facilities. To address these issues, attention needs to be paid to the humanization and practicality of public space design, providing good facilities and services, and enhancing students’ sense of belonging and collective consciousness. In addition, research has found that domestic research on the college system in universities is mostly focused on management and architectural planning, with a lack of targeted research on the construction of public spaces in college system student apartments. In the future,it is necessary to strengthen research and exploration on the construction of public spaces in college system student apartments to support the implementation of the "college system" model and lay a good foundation for the comprehensive cultivation of talents. Therefore, this article takes the public spaces of student apartments in college "academy system" as the research object, exploring how to design appropriate public spaces to promote interaction and communication among students, and better achieve the educational goals of the "academy system" mode.Firstly, this article analyzes relevant literature, theories, and excellent cases both domestically and internationally. In foreign countries, the "academy system" is called "residential colleges," and its research mainly focuses on the development and construction of residential colleges. In China, research on the "academy system" mainly focuses on the cultural spirit, architectural design, and development trends of academy systems. In terms of relevant theoretical research, firstly,it analyzes students’ material and spiritual needs in the apartment and their behavior types in space, including selective activities, necessary activities, and social activities. In addition,it analyzes the influence of privacy, interpersonal relationships, and territoriality in environmental psychology on student activities. When analyzing the excellent cases of student apartments in the "academy system" in China and abroad, the focus is on the key design directions, including diverse public functional spaces and living facilities, reasonably laid out public activity spaces, and high-quality public space environments.Next, conduct research on the construction situation and characteristics of college apartments in the form of a book college system, and summarize the problems existing in this type of apartment by conducting on-site research on the public spaces of book college student apartments and a questionnaire survey of student satisfaction with public spaces.Currently, the construction types of book college system student apartments include independent, courtyard, college street, and regular grouping styles. In on-site research,it was found that there are several problems with the public spaces of book college system student apartments, including inadequate functional configuration, unreasonable layout, lack of comfort, and insufficient atmosphere creation. Finally, let’s discuss the design strategies for the public spaces in the college’s residential colleges, based on the research in Chapter 3.First,the public spaces in the college’s residential colleges are mainly divided into multifunctional spaces, transportation spaces, and outdoor spaces, and have five characteristics of functionality, convenience, flexibility, connectivity, and place. At the same time, different student needs in the apartment correspond to different types of behavior and functional facilities. Then, based on the problems identified in Chapter 3 and the research summarized in Chapter 4,design principles and strategies are proposed, including four aspects: functional configuration, space organization, space atmosphere, and landscape environment. In terms of functional configuration,it is necessary to consider the reasonable configuration of different functions such as learning, leisure activities, office, and service to meet the diverse needs of students. In terms of space organization, space composite and layout should be used to improve the utilization of public spaces. In terms of space atmosphere,it is necessary to create a friendly scale, diverse materials, and cultural elements to enhance students’ sense of belonging and cultural identity. In terms of landscape environment, attention should be paid to the integration of landscape complexity, landscape and regional culture, and the participation of teachers and students to create unique and functionally diverse landscape spaces and achieve the educational role of the landscape environment. Finally, the above design strategies are applied and verified through the optimization of the residential college project in the Jianghuai Campus of North China University of Water Resources and Electric Power.
