Abstract/Summary:
Waterfronts,as blue and green spaces in cities, boast privileged ecological resources and landscapes.Along with the rapid urban development, waterfront wildscapes on the edge of the city have been increasingly invaded and damaged by humans. At the same time, the development and construction of waterfronts see problems such as less thoughtful management and assimilated landscapes, resulting in loss of the vitality of waterfront spaces. The degrading of waterfronts has also harmed the interaction between nature and today’s public pursuing spiritual satisfaction. In the political context of the construction of ecological civilization, urban wildscapes--a reflection on urban and rural, natural and cultural processes, have gradually drawn the attention of scholars. The idea of urban wildscapes agrees with the"community of a common destiny shared by man and nature" proposed in the Report of the 19th National Party Congress.Wildscapes are everywhere in cities;wildscapes never reject humans.Wildscape-like waterfront landscapes repair the ecological environment, continue the cultural context, connect cities and nature, and meet the public demand for getting closer to nature. On such a basis, addressing the existing problems with urban waterfronts, this paper aims to study how to repair the waterfront ecological system through landscape design and at the same time establish a harmonious relationship between man and nature from the perspective of urban wildscapes. In this paper,on top of the concept of urban wildscapes, the correlation between urban wildscapes and waterfront landscapes is summarized by sorting out the related ideas, that is,the combination of the wilderness ecology and green infrastructure in cities can bring out the value in waste waterfront green spaces. The two are mutually activating and restricting. This paper is unfolded from the four dimensions of natural substrate, spatial partition, cultural core, and experiential function, offering ideas for the ecological and cultural construction of urban waterfront landscapes. This paper is divided into six parts. In the introduction, the research background and the domestic research dynamics are given, and the concept of urban wildscapes is proposed.Chapter 1 is a brief introduction to the evolutionary value of urban wildscapes and the constructive types of waterfront landscapes, where the concept of urban wildscapes studied herein is defined as part of the urban green substrate. In Chapter 2,the correlation between urban wildscapes and waterfront landscapes is explored. The methods and ideas for designing waterfront wild landscapes are summarized from the ecological, spatial, cultural, and functional perspectives. In Chapter 3,the existing problems with and people’s needs for the waterfront landscape at Liaojiagou, the subject of the survey, are summarized. In Chapter 4,on top of the theory of urban waterfront wildscapes and the present situation of the subject, the following design strategies are proposed:ecological filling, coordinated spatial hierarchy, translation of cultural imagery, and extension of public experience. In Chapter 5,the results of the theoretical research are applied to the subject in practice.Under the design theme of" Remebering the Source of Water·Existing in Harmony with Wilderness",the waterfront wildscape ecology is restored with regional cultural characteristics and green infrastructure well integrated with the environment. These efforts effectively solve major problems with the site including degraded natural habitat, structural differentiation, weakened cultural perception, and rigid forms of experience, and construct urban waterfront wildscapes highlighting the harmonious coexistence of man and nature.
