Abstract/Summary:
Level 3 automation would play an important role or a long time in the future.Automation trust will effect the efficiency and security of human-computer cooperation. The inappropriate initial trust may increase the risk of human-machine co-driving at L3 automated driving. Therefore,it is important that the driver can calibrate the initial trust. In Study 1,the effect of expectation of system capability on initial trust and trust calibration was investigated.Study 1(Experiment 1)introduced system capability by qualified system capability levels to investigate the effect of the system capability expectation on the driver’s initial trust and the dynamic Trust. The results show that the expectation level of the system capability can affect the initial trust and the dynamic trust. But the effects are nonlinear. When the system capability is too low/too high, the driver’s trust will tend to be centralized. In Study 2,To understand the mechanism of trust calibration from the perspective of the trust calibration process two experiments were conducted:(1)Experiment 2,investigated trust calibrated through analytic process. We investigated how trust was calibrated when the driver engaged in NDRT with different cognitive load demands.By that analytic process and affective process were separated. The results showed that the trust calibration process is different according to the NDRT’s cognitive load during driving. When the driver is engaged in high cognitive load NDRT,his trust towards the driving system is lower than engaged in low cognitive load NDRT,and the takeover performance is also worse. If the driver is engaged in high cognitive load NDRT,then he does not have sufficient cognitive resources to conduct analytic processes of trust calibration but relies on an explicit expectation. In Experiment 3,from the perspective of affective process,we explored the effect of implicit attitudes of drivers on trust calibration. The results showed that the initial trust and dynamic trust were insensitive to expectation, but drivers with an implicit trust bias towards automatic systems are affected by the level of system ability expectations.Overall,it is found that the ability expectation of the system influences trust and behavior during driving. But under different trust process, trust calibration worked in different ways. This study is helpful to the understanding of driver’s trust calibration. This study found that the expectation of system ability can affect divers’ trust and behavior towards to the system, but the influence is non-linear.And the trust paths also affect trust calibration. On the one hand, when cognitive resources lack, drivers can not calibrate dynamic trust and behavior through analytic trust, and will depend on the initial expectation. On the other hand, only if the driver’s implicit attitude to the system is positive, the expectation of the system’s ability will affect dynamic trust.
