The traditional wooden dwellings in western Hunan were developed and formed in the age of lack of active adjustment means and technology of indoor environment,so they must adapt to the local climate actively, make full use of the favorable climatic conditions and try to avoid the unfavorable climatic factors. Therefore, the traditional wooden dwellings in Western Hunan must contain a lot of wisdom and methods to deal with the local climate for thousands of years. On the other hand, the current xiangxi area is facing aging and empty-nest problems, and the elderly occupy a large proportion of the residents of traditional houses. In order to improve the quality of the living environment of the elderly and meet the needs of the modern life of the elderly,it has become an unavoidable proposition for the traditional dwellings to be suitable for aging.Under this logic, this paper integrates the study of climate adaptation strategy and the study of suitable aging renewal of traditional wooden dwellings in western Hunan. The research revolves around a central, three elements, the central is suitable for aging, the three elements are architecture, climate and the elderly.Firstly, the climate adaptability strategy of traditional wooden dwellings in Western Hunan was studied through field investigation, residential mapping and indoor physical environment measurement.Based on the analysis of the whole, sampling and individual cases, the climate adaptation strategies are described in detail from the level of settlement, building ontology and auxiliary equipment, and summarized and extracted in the form of tables. The conclusion is that heat, ventilation, sun shading, flood and rain protection are the key content of climate adaptation strategy of traditional wooden houses in western Hunan.Secondly, based on questionnaires and in-depth interviews with the elderly, the present situation, basic characteristics and needs of the elderly are deeply analyzed. This paper tries to extract the feedback results of the users to the physical space, and summarizes the internal relationship between the users and the physical space. The needs of the elderly can be summarized into four aspects: function and space aging requirements at the level of physical space, comfort requirements under the interaction between users and physical space, and relevant architectural technology and architectural art requirements. On the basis of this, this paper puts forward the strategy of suitable aging renewal of traditional wooden dwellings in western Hunan from the perspective of climate adaptability. The strategy is based on the five basic principles, the original climate adaptation strategy, according to the needs of the elderly.Specific strategies include:Function order optimal aging strategy(through life space module, function order combination, streamline planning, placement auxiliary space, gray space transition way to organize the order of ageing space),space adaptive optimal aging strategy(the functional space to deal with the elderly physiological and psychological characteristics of adaptive design,on the time dimension space to its variability to adapt to the same old age Sustainable living can be achieved based on the change of people’s self-care degree in different time periods),comfort and aging strategy(focusing on thermal environment, light environment and wind environment),architectural technology strategy(fire prevention, moisture proof, sound insulation, smoke exhaust and energy saving),architectural art strategy(interior color and facade restoration). All the strategies focus on the exploration, inheritance and optimization of the original climate adaptation strategies. Finally, based on the research on "commonness" in the previous chapter, the design practice of "individuality" is carried out, that is,to interpret "individuality" from the perspective of "commonness" and complete the transition from theoretical research to concrete practice.
