Historic districts have witnessed the development of cities and have played a significant role in developing civilization and culture throughout history.Traditional courtyards in historical blocks should be protected and renewed through a design process that fully respects local cultures and traditions. It encompasses not only the building itself but also the durability of the social structure they embody and the integrity of the overall patterns of blocks.Studying the sustainable development of traditional courtyard buildings in historical blocks is of significant importance to itself and the development of humanity and civilization as a whole.Due to the growth of society and the enhancement of the cultural value of historical blocks, the protection and renewal of historical blocks are now the concern of both government and society. This paper examines the sustainable design of a courtyard space on the East 4th block of Ming and Qing Street in Liulin County. An overview of the evolution of courtyard buildings during the Ming and Qing Dynasties can be gleaned from analyzing the context texture of historical blocks during these two dynasties,as well as the components of traditional courtyard buildings, with the protection and renewal of historical and cultural blocks as the basis of the design. In light of the social changes and urban renewal, this paper focuses on the sustainable design method of balance and coordination between contemporary courtyard building designs and the cultural background of traditional historical buildings. As the East Fourth Block of Ming and Qing Street plays a central role in the location of modern cities and historic blocks,it is the place for spatial transformation from urban functions to historical blocks. In order to strengthen the understanding of the traditional cultural characteristics of Ming and Qing historical blocks and of the development law of courtyards, this study first examines the history, environment, and space of Ming and Qing streets. In terms of space treatment, using the architectural elements of the traditional courtyards in Ming and Qing Street, the layout of the blocks, the scale of the typical courtyards, and the relationship between the figure of the building and its background, this paper secondly optimizes courtyard space in Ming and Qing historical blocks in order to achieve sustainable development in the following directions: continuing the traditional spatial pattern and cultural texture of the courtyard, integrating cultural resources and business functions, optimizing public space, and controlling the scale and style of the building. It is expected that through the research and practice of this paper, some reference opinions and strategies can be put forward for the protection and sustainable development of traditional courtyard space in historical blocks.
