Settlement is an important part of the urban spatial system,and the settlement boundary bears the important function of defining an communicating between the settlement and the residential community,and between the settlement and other urban spaces.Many contradictions and problems in the construction and development of modern urban settlements are reflected in the settlement boundary space one by one.With the accelerated urbanization process in China,the construction of small towns has entered a rapid development stage.The layout and scale of small town settlements play a crucial role in their spatial construction,affecting not only the spatial structure of small towns,but also their economic and other development.Since small town settlements are different from large cities in terms of land size,spatial structure and lifestyle,they are characterized by small land size and small-scale space,which makes the boundary places and morphological structures of small town settlements have the characteristics of single form,multiple functions,complexity and ambiguity.According to the research on the current situation and related data,the boundary expressions of small town settlements and external space are basically divided into two categories:solid and virtual,the solid being walls,roads and buildings,and the virtual being squares,landscapes and rivers.It has become a challenging research area to design and configure the boundary forms and spaces of small town settlements in order to act as a barrier to the internal space of the settlements,and at the same time to interact with other urban spaces to form an active public space.In this context,this paper takes Chengguan Town of Ningxia County as the research object and conducts a step-by-step study of the settlement boundary space based on the results of the research and analysis of the existing settlements and boundaries in Chengguan Town,hoping to propose better strategies to create a boundary space optimization strategy with diversified forms and distinctive features that are truly used by the residents.The research method of this paper is the theoretical research method and the current situation analysis method,and a more systematic and generalized study of the settlement boundary space in Chengguan Town,Ningxia County is conducted.First,on the basis of the overall research results,the research scope of boundary space is defined,and the current situation of the boundary space is divided into two categories: the settlement borders with external urban open space and the settlement borders with external physical functional space.30 samples in different locations and forms in Chengguan Town of Ningxia County are analyzed in their current situation,and the typical characteristics of these samples are summarized,while their elemental composition and morphology are briefly analyzed As a basis for the later classification of boundary types,four types of boundary patterns are summarized,namely,"permeable" boundary,"interactive" boundary,"closed" boundary,and "interactive" boundary.At the same time,we selected representative ones among 30 samples for detailed characteristics and data analysis,and then conducted basic research and analysis on their material and spatial factors,functional characteristics,scenic environment characteristics and effects,and finally summarized the characteristics of the four different boundary forms.Based on the preliminary typological study and the analysis of the current situation,we firstly summarize the advantages and problems of the settlement boundary space under the four types of boundary forms,and at the same time summarize the real problems of the settlement boundary space in Chengguan Town,Ningxia County,including the spiritual and material aspects,i.e.,the four aspects of spatial form,material elements,social life and characteristic creation,and finally consider the different optimization paths for the settlement boundary space under the four types of boundary forms.We hope to build a new community management mode and a composite boundary space system by adjusting the structure of the settlement,reconstructing the boundary space and shaping the characteristic scenes,so as to jointly improve the quality of the settlement boundary space.We hope to build a new community management model and a composite boundary space system by adjusting the settlement structure,reconstructing the boundary space,and shaping the characteristic scenes,so as to jointly improve the quality of the settlement boundary space and contribute to the future development of the settlement in Chengguan Town,Ningxia County.
