Ming and Qing dynasties are the prime period of ancient garden architecture in China. As one of the main styles of garden architecture,"yue dong(moon gate)",is commonplace in the paintings and illustrations of this period.Nevertheless, ancient people gradually came to realize that the space shifting function of "moon gate" could be made useful in narrative drawing while they were depicting the face of their times. For example,"moon gate" plays the space overlapping role as the background in the illustration of printmaking novels published during Ming and Qing, hence a complete narrative content could be constructed in a limited space. With comparison,it is found that the roles played by "round moon" and "hole" shapes in drawing are extremely similar to the roles played by "moon gate" in architecture. Therefore,it is understandable that not only is "moon gate" commonplace in the paintings and illustrations during Ming and Qing, but also ancient drawers made use of the uniqueness of moon gate in drawing. In his book Building Another Universe,Japanese researcher Takeda Masaya wrote that "you reach the moon palace when you go through the moon gate.Hence, the garden is the moon palace on earth" His imagination does not come out of thin air,but includes the understanding of ancient Chinese people about "hole"."Hole" contains both meanings of ascent and going-through,as in convenient shift of space,in ancient China. The "hole gate" in a garden is physically suppressed yet contains such meaning as well.In addition, the meaning of "hole" extends to how ancient people understood round space in paintings, which became the logic of ancient people unknowingly, and then a question is invoked, whether the round patterns in ancient Chinese paintings are associated with "the moon"?Research shows that the use of round patterns in ancient Chinese paintings, especially the"moonlight" printmaking, and round fans are the most frequently appeared. Some sort of connection with the moon can be inferred whether it is the name of the "moonlight"printmaking or the images associated with round fans by ancient people.
