Research On The Design Changes Of Divisible Type In The 19th Century

The 19th century was a critical period for the updating and iteration of Chinese character printing technology.During this period,Protestant missionaries tried to enter China,and the first thing they had to solve was the problem of Chinese character printing.In many practices of missionaries,the combination of Divisible Type is undoubtedly the key printing technology.Based on data statistics,Chinese characters can be divided into two types: detachable and non-detachable.For detachable types,the radicals of Chinese characters and other components are separately cast into movable characters.In the printing process,Chinese characters can be printed by means of Divisible Type splicing.This technology greatly reduces the material cost,labor cost and time cost in the casting process of movable type.In this thesis,the 19th century is selected as the research period,and the design change of the rise and fall of Divisible Type is studied.Firstly,this thesis discusses the background,purpose and significance of the topic of Divisible Type,analyzes the research status of Divisible Type in the field of Chinese character printing,and expounds the main content,research path and research method of Divisible Type research.Secondly,it reviews the exploration of Chinese character printing in ancient China and the West,as well as the exploration of Chinese character printing by Western missionaries in China.Finally,the thesis makes a detailed analysis of the construction and development of Divisible Type,clarifies the historical development of Divisible Type,explores the design principle of Divisible Type,summarizes the historical significance and value of Divisible Type,adds relevant literature and materials,and fills some research gaps in China.Although Divisible Type is a kind of movable type technology used in the transitional stage of technology,it provides us with a novel perspective to examine Chinese characters,which is still useful for the printing and design of Chinese characters today.
