As widely used in onshore and offshore oil production, the electrical submersible pumps(ESPs)suffer from significant performance degradation for producing highviscosity hydrocarbon fluids. In this paper,a new design of the labyrinth screw pump(LSP)is proposed to facilitate the high-viscosity oil production, which may partially replace the multistage centrifugal pumps of ESP for heavy oil extraction.Based on ‘cellular supercharging theory’ which was proposed by Golubiev,a prototype of LSP is designed and manufactured, while a experimental facility was built up to test pump’s performance with different rotate speeds and viscosity fluids. The fitting function is used to summary the influence of different operating conditions to the trend of H-Q and N-Q by regression analysis. The applicability of affinity law to LSPs is verified, which is widely used in centrifugal pumps.A straightforward expression to correlate head and flow rate correction factors which was proposed by Solano,as a general method to estimate LSP performance degradation, with no limit to a single operating condition or structural parameters. The characteristics of internal flow is investigated by computational fluid dynamics(CFD)simulations in Fluent software.LSPs can obtain higher head than ESPs under the same working conditions,by comparing the obtained correlations between the head and flow correction factors in consistent with Ofuchi. The above research has guiding significance for the application and popularization of LSPs.
