The ceremony is a traditional rite of passage for Han Chinese, held when the man is twenty and the woman is fifteen, and has been known as the ’beginning of rites’ since ancient times. The change of costume is a major part of the ritual, carrying a rich connotation of etiquette and good wishes, and is of great research value. At present, the study of the crowning ritual costume is more often studied together with other ritual costumes, lacking in targeted research, and also lacking in combining the fragmented crowning ritual with the crowning ritual costume for analysis, without clarifying the relationship between the art of costume and the crowning ritual ritual. This project takes the traditional Han Chinese crowning ritual costume as the research object, and uses various research methods such as literature, fieldwork, questionnaires and design practice to analyse and explore it.By combing through the existing literature, the concepts of rite of passage, crown rite, maturity rite and crown and maturity rite costume are defined, and the origin and development of the rite of crown and maturity is clarified. The study also examines the changes in Han dress from the Zhou,Han,Song and Ming dynasties, and analyses in detail the shape, colour and pattern of the dresses in different periods to outline the basic appearance of Han dress and to elaborate on the cultural connotations of the dress. Finally,by understanding the contemporary forms of inheritance and perceptions of the rite of passage, the results of the research are combined with innovative practices for the rite of passage dress. The study concludes that the ritual was born in the Zhou Dynasty, flourished in the Qin and Han Dynasties, declined in the Northern and Southern Dynasties, revived in the Song and Tang Dynasties, declined again in the Yuan Dynasty, revived for the second time in the Ming Dynasty, and gradually died out in the Qing Dynasty. It was first established in the Zhou dynasty, when the dress worn for politics, the military and rituals was used as the three plus dresses, giving the recipient the right to manage people, participate in the military and family rituals through the change of dress, signifying the expectation that the new adult would build a social identity.Later,as the dynasties changed, the cultural connotations contained in the costume began to diminish and the hierarchy began to increase.During the Song and Ming dynasties, the rituals began to expand into folklore and were gradually combined with folklore, and the costume was gradually simplified and reduced to a means of maintaining political rule.In contemporary times, there are three main forms of rites of passage: folk rites of passage, campus rites of passage at the age of 18,and Hanfu rites of passage.Based on the previous research, three design inspirations are drawn: to take cultural heritage as the guide,to explore the contemporary value of the crown and maturity ritual dress, and to respect the reconstructive wishes of the consumer, providing a theoretical basis for design practice.Through the innovative thinking of the constructed design of the crown and maturity dresses, practical experience is provided for the subsequent reconstruction of adult dresses in China, which seeks to benefit the further development of contemporary ceremonial dress.
