Research On Traditional Umbrella Making Techniques And Design In Hangzhou Area

This thesis takes the technology and design of Hangzhou’s traditional umbrellas as the object of study.Based on the vision of design,it integrates the interdisciplinary research methods of archaeology,sociology,iconography and anthropology to collate archaeological and historical documents related to China’s traditional umbrellas,mainly from the aspects of design features,production technology and aesthetic qualities to sort out the development and evolution of China’s traditional umbrellas,and then explore the differentiated The thesis focuses on the development of conventional umbrellas in Hangzhou.This thesis analyses the origins and development of traditional umbrellas in Hangzhou,their construction techniques,decorative aesthetics and the transformation and application of conventional umbrellas in modern design.To conduct a more comprehensive and in-depth design study of conventional umbrellas in Hangzhou.Firstly,by tracing the transition of the traditional umbrella,the process of its evolution from a "fixed and simple shape" to a"complex structure that can be opened and closed" is clarified;the development from a"single umbrella for shading from the sun and rain" to a "diversified umbrella" is studied.The development of the umbrella industry from a "single function" to a "diverse range of uses" is also explored,as well as the evolution of the production and sales models of the traditional umbrella industry,which inspires how traditional craftsmanship can be combined with modern industry.Secondly,through the production of umbrellas by the present-day non-genetic inheritors in Hangzhou,And by combining existing texts such as archives,newspapers and trademarks,we will collate the technical processes and details of traditional umbrellas,clarify the development and improvement of umbrella-making techniques in terms of "raw material selection,umbrella skeleton production and umbrella surface waterproofing",and explore "The development and improvement of umbrella-making strategies in terms of the selection of raw materials,the production of the umbrella skeleton and the waterproofing of the umbrella surface.Thirdly,based on the main design elements of traditional umbrellas,we look at the beauty of the material from natural bamboo and handmade paper,the beauty of the shape from the matching head and handle of the umbrella,and the beauty of the decoration from the design of patterns and current color aesthetics of each period.We then look at the dynamic umbrellas and discover the beauty of the rhythm of their movement,opening and closing and rotation.Fourthly,in the context of inheriting and promoting intangible cultural heritage,the visual design of lamps and their brands are explored in the context of how traditional handicrafts can be revitalized in modern times.The unique temperament of conventional handicrafts is integrated into people’s living utensils nowadays,trying to retain the charm of traditional crafts in daily life and combining wonderful tradition with contemporary design.Social changes are not always reflected in ’big places’,but also in small everyday objects such as umbrellas,which reflect the dynamic development of social history and culture.Hangzhou’s conventional umbrella-making techniques are a tangible expression of traditional Chinese skills and a typical physical manifestation of the Chinese artisan spirit,which continues to influence the way local people travel and their aesthetic sensibilities.An in-depth study and insight into traditional umbrella-making techniques and design ideas will help to how modernize conventional techniques.It also explores the specific ways in which conventional Chinese artifacts can be integrated into contemporary everyday life from a design perspective.so that the inheritance and development of China’s great cultural traditions can be realized...
