China’s rapid economic development after the reform and opening up has created a modern "growth miracle",but also a series of environmental problems.Rapid economic growth and rapid environmental degradation have gone hand in hand over the past few decades, making it a priority to shift the economic development model to achieve sustainable development.Economic growth not only deteriorates the environmental quality of the region, but also has an important impact on the environmental quality of neighboring regions. In the process of studying the environmental effects of economic growth, the spillover effect of pollution has gradually gained attention, and the environmental pollution of neighboring regions by economic growth has gradually become the focus of research on economic growth and environmental pollution. The impact of economic growth on environmental pressure in neighboring regions is mainly manifested in four aspects: Firstly, economic growth brings about the expansion of production scale, which increases the demand for factor inputs in neighboring regions and increases the environmental pressure.Secondly, along with economic growth, industrial linkages between regions in China have gradually increased, boosting the economies of neighboring regions while increasing the environmental pressure on neighboring regions.Lastly, the level of technology affects environmental pressure in neighboring regions through technology diffusion and technology transfer, and there are also spillover effects of environmental policies, which together constitute the spatial spillover effects of economic growth on environmental pressure. Therefore, this paper will examine the spatial spillover effects of economic growth on environmental pressure from four perspectives: scale effect, structural effect, technology effect and policy effect, test the existence of environmental Kuznets curve in a spatial perspective, and examine the changes of spatial environmental Kuznets curve under different economic stages and different pollutant conditions,in order to provide important references for the government to formulate environmental protection policies. The paper follows the technical line of "theory-empirical evidence-conclusionrecommendation",and analyzes the four effects of economic growth on environmental pressure(scale effect, structural effect, technology effect and policy effect)and their spatial spillover, based on the theoretical evolution of environmental Kuznets curve and related literature at home and abroad.Based on the theoretical evolution of the environmental Kuznets curve and related literature at home and abroad, this paper analyzes the four effects of economic growth on environmental pressure(scale effect, structural effect, technology effect and policy effect)and their spatial spillover, and constructs a theoretical framework of economic growth on environmental pressure to provide a theoretical basis and guidance for the empirical analysis. In the empirical analysis, the spatial correlation between economic growth and environmental pressure is examined using exploratory spatial analysis tools, and a spatial panel data model is constructed to examine the impact of economic growth on environmental pressure and to test the existence of a spatial environmental Kuznets curve.Further, the article analyzes the heterogeneity of the pollution spillover effects of economic growth, examines the effects of economic growth on different pollutants, examines the changes of the spatial environmental Kuznets curve at different stages of economic and social development, and proposes reasonable and feasible policy recommendations accordingly.First, this paper systematically reviews the existing domestic and international related literature, including the related studies on the measurement of economic growth and environmental stress, the related studies on the factors affecting environmental stress, and the related studies on the impact of economic growth on environmental stress. The literature review provides an empirical basis for the selection of proxy variables in empirical studies on the one hand, and provides important references for the selection of appropriate control variables and empirical models on the other. The literature review reflects the current status and development trend of the research on the impact of economic growth on environmental pressure, identifies the shortcomings of the existing studies, and provides directions for further research in this field.Second, the theoretical framework of economic growth affecting environmental pressure is built, and four important components of the pollution spillover effect of economic growth are analyzed. The succession and development of theories related to economic growth and environmental pressure since the industrial revolution are sorted out, including the theory of spaceship economy, the theory of circular economy, the theory of sustainable development and the environmental Kuznets curve hypothesis.Introduce the advantages of spatial econometrics to provide a technical basis for the study. This paper describes the theoretical mechanism of economic growth affecting environmental pressure, analyzes the four effects of economic growth affecting environmental pressure and its spatial spillover, constructs a theoretical framework of economic growth affecting environmental pressure, and provides a theoretical basis and guidance for empirical analysis.Third, the spatial influence of economic growth on environmental pressure was examined. The entropy weighting method was used to assign weights to seven pollutant emissions to construct comprehensive indicators to evaluate environmental pressure, and the spatial correlation between economic growth and environmental pressure was examined by using exploratory spatial analysis tools, and it was found that there was a significant spatial correlation between economic growth and environmental pressure.Further, the post-adjacent spatial weight matrices were selected, the basic panel data model and the spatial panel data model were constructed, and the spatial Durbin model was selected for regression analysis after the identification test of the model, and the regression results were tested for robustness using the method of replacing the core variables to measure and replacing the spatial weight matrices, and it was found that the environmental pressure in both the region and the neighboring regions showed an inverted The spatial environmental Kuznets curve is verified by the "U" curve relationship. In addition, the structural effect significantly deteriorates the environmental quality of the region with pollution spillover, while the technology effect and policy effect tend to alleviate the environmental pressure in the region and neighboring regions.Fourth, the heterogeneity of economic growth on different pollutants was examined.By examining the spatial correlation of seven pollutants and selecting six of them for pollutant heterogeneity analysis,it was found that the environmental pressure of six pollutants in their own and neighboring areas showed an inverted "U" curve relationship with economic growth, and the existence of spatial environmental Kuznets curve was verified in different pollutants, but different pollutants reached the inflection point However, different pollutants reached the inflection point at different times, and water pollution reached the inflection point last.In addition, the structural effects of different pollutants show different degrees of pollution spillover, and the policy effects show a "green paradox" in some pollutants.Fifth, the heterogeneous effects of economic growth on different pollutants at different stages of economic development were examined. The study time was divided into two intervals to examine the changes of the spatial environmental Kuznets curve at different stages, and it was found that the environmental pressure at both stages showed an inverted "U" curve relationship with economic growth, which verified the existence of the spatial environmental Kuznets curve at different economic development stages, but the inflection points of the environmental Kuznets curve at both periods were similar. The inflection point of the Kuznets curve is similar in both periods. With economic growth, the pollution spillover effects from the scale and structure effects are alleviated, while the environmental improvement effects from the policy effects are strengthened. The theoretical framework of economic growth affecting environmental pressure is constructed in the paper, which deepens the theoretical understanding of the relationship between economic growth and environmental pressure. At the same time, the empirical study of the spatial impact of economic growth on environmental pressure is carried out, which enriches the empirical evidence of the spatial environmental Kuznets curve and provides theoretical basis and empirical support for the construction of ecological civilization in China.
