People are increasingly demanding the quality of environmental information disclosed by enterprises. In 2022,the Ministry of Ecology and Environment issued the Administrative Measures for Legal Disclosure of Environmental Accounting Information by Enterprises and the Guidelines on the Format of Legal Disclosure of Environmental Accounting Information by Enterprises, which further clarify the content of legal disclosure of environmental accounting information by enterprises and unify the format of legal disclosure of environmental accounting information,The Guidelines further clarify the content of environmental accounting information disclosed by enterprises in accordance with the law, unify the form of environmental accounting information disclosed in accordance with the law, guide and help enterprises to disclose environmental accounting information in accordance with the law,and fully reflect enterprises’ compliance with ecological and environmental regulations and environmental management. However, few enterprises have published environmental reports in accordance with the applicable standards.Based on stakeholder theory, asymmetric information theory and sustainable development theory, this study examines the quality of environmental accounting information of listed companies in the paper industry, using Chenming Paper as a case study. This paper is divided into six parts, mainly background analysis, problem analysis, root cause analysis and countermeasure suggestions. The background section first introduces the history of Chenming Paper, its production process and environmental impact, its environmental management and performance, and its environmental risks. This is followed by an overview of the institutional arrangements for environmental information quality in Chinese paper companies, highlighting the difficulties encountered. In terms of problem and cause analysis,Chenming Paper’s annual reports, announcements, and other independent reports from 2017 to 2021 are first analysed through content analysis to provide a detailed analysis of its environmental accounting disclosures. Then, the background and issues are analysed, and the causes of the issues are investigated in more detail.Based on an in-depth comparative analysis, this paper adopts the entropy topsis method and constructs a hierarchical model consisting of five primary indicators and twenty secondary indicators. The evaluation framework is then applied to the case companies and the quality of their environmental accounting information is found to be inferior to that of the control group. The gaps in the quality of the case companies’ environmental accounting information are analysed in terms of reliability, completeness and timeliness. |
