In recent years, environmental protection issues such as the greenhouse effect, frequent extreme weather events, and nuclear leaks have received sustained global attention. The public’s demand for environmental protection, low energy consumption, and sustainable development is becoming increasingly urgent, and governments around the world have also introduced corresponding environmental policies to address potential environmental crises. How to form a sustainable development concept for enterprises, strengthen green production, and improve environmental performance in the context of the national "dual carbon" strategy has become an important theoretical and practical issue. The improvement of enterprise environmental performance will inevitably involve the transformation of enterprise planning,decision-making and operation mode, and Digital transformation can play an important role in this transformation. In the era of digital technology,Digital transformation of enterprises is the only way to achieve highquality and sustainable development.Enterprises can empower their traditional production methods through Digital transformation, which provides a material basis for improving their environmental performance, and is conducive to reducing the difficulty for stakeholders to obtain information about enterprises and effectively improving the comprehensive governance capability of the regulatory authorities, thus further promoting enterprises to pay attention to the environmental problems brought about by their own production and operation. This paper reviews the relevant literature on corporate environmental performance and corporate Digital transformation, analyzes the relationship between corporate Digital transformation and environmental performance based on sustainable Development theory theory, stakeholder theory, information asymmetry theory and resource slack theory, and puts forward research hypotheses. In order to verify the proposed hypothesis, this paper selects Shanghai and Shenzhen A-share listed companies from 2011 to 2020 as a sample to empirically test the impact of Digital transformation on environmental performance. The study found that the higher the degree of Digital transformation of enterprises, the better their environmental performance. After a series of robustness tests such as substitution variable method,Instrumental variables estimation method,Heckman twostage regression and propensity score matching method, this conclusion is still valid. In addition, this paper also explored the impact path of Digital transformation on environmental performance, and found that internal control, information transparency and green innovation played a mediating role. This paper further studies the moderating effect of the nature of enterprise property rights, industry attribute characteristics and environmental uncertainty on the relationship between enterprise Digital transformation and environmental performance. The possible research contributions of this paper are as follows: First, based on the resource slack theory, this paper deeply studies the impact of digital transformation on corporate environmental performance, which theoretically expands the influencing factors of corporate environmental performance, and is also a supplement to relevant literature on corporate environmental performance.Secondly, from the realistic background of China’s digital economy development, based on the perspective of environmental performance, this paper expands the research vision of the economic consequences of digital transformation, and enriches the literature on the economic consequences of digital transformation of enterprises.Thirdly, this paper deeply reveals the mechanism of the impact of digital transformation on enterprise environmental performance from three aspects of internal control, information transparency and green innovation, and opens the "black box" of the causal relationship between digital transformation and environmental performance.
