The policy of "high accumulation, low consumption, and high investment" since the reform and opening up has continuously improved the living standards of residents. However, due to the dual economic structure of urban and rural areas, the living standards of rural residents in Henan Province are still lower than those of urban residents. This reflects the consumption gap between urban and rural residents, which is a microcosm of China’s dual economic structure. The unbalanced economic development between urban and rural areas in Henan Province has led to the increasing gap in consumption between urban and rural areas,so narrowing the consumption gap between urban and rural residents is of great significance for breaking the dual structure of urban and rural areas. This paper first analyzes the basic situation of the consumption differences between urban and rural residents in Henan Province, and makes a descriptive analysis of the differences between urban and rural residents’ consumption levels, consumption structures, and different regions.Secondly, based on the data of the eight major consumption expenditures of urban and rural residents in Henan Province from 1990 to2021,this paper constructs a nonlinear model to study the nonlinear evolutionary characteristics and paths of urban and rural residents’ consumption structure, and predicts the zone transfer state of each type in the next period, and obtains the evolutionary characteristics and path prediction of different types of consumption expenditure. Then, the panel quantile regression model is used to analyze the data of 18 cities in Henan Province from 2000-2021 to explore the factors affecting the consumption gap between urban and rural areas. The empirical analysis shows that factors such as urban-rural income gap, economic development level, industrial structure upgrading, government investment, and population structure all have an impact on the consumption gap between urban and rural areas, and the degree of impact varies according to different regions. Finally, the factors affecting the consumption gap between urban and rural areas under spatial effects are added, and a spatial Durbin model with fixed effects at different time points is constructed. The conclusion is that industrial structure upgrading, government investment, and per capita regional GDP have spatial spillover effects on the consumption gap between urban and rural areas. In the last part of the article, effective suggestions are proposed based on the research analysis results. In terms of consumption structure,it is suggested to promote high-level consumption projects and promote the upgrading and convergence of consumption structure of urban and rural residents. In terms of the factors affecting the consumption gap,it is suggested to increase policy tilt towards rural areas and implement different measures in different regions to achieve targeted results.
