The object of this article is the theory of bioregionalism criticism. The article discusses bioregionalism criticism in terms of its generative basis, theoretical discourse and textual interpretation characteristics, and finally summarizes its values and limitations. This thesis consists of three parts: introduction, body(four chapters),and conclusion. The first chapter introduction is divided into two parts, the first part is the research origin of bioregionalism criticism theory. On the one hand,it starts from the relationship between bioregionalism and ecological holism, and points out the role of bioregionalism in restoring regional natural ecosystems;on the other hand,in the context of globalization, the lack of human sense of place and identity makes bioregionalism criticism research more feasible and realistic. The second part summarizes the current status of bioregionalism research at home and abroad. The second chapter,“Bioregionalism critical theory generation”,the factors that shape bioregionalism criticism are analyzed mainly in terms of theoretical sources and internal generation. The deep ecology theory, which advocates a natural management model and living in a bioregional paradigm,is the theoretical background of bioregionalism;in the 1950 s and 1960 s,the “counterculture” movement in the United States started a wave of “returning to nature” and the bioregional movement emerged against this background, advocating active adaptation to the ecological environment and the establishment of a culturally stable and ecologically sustainable home.Chapter 3,“Theoretical Discourse of Bioregionalism Criticism”,covers four aspects. In the first section,it is clarified that the core of bioregionalism is “bioregion”,and it is introduced that“bioregion” is a place defined by natural factors such as biomes, watersheds, topography and climate, and bound by natural rules. It further explains in detail the internal composition of bioregions by using three types of divisions: Kirkpatrick Sale’s ecological, geographical, and morphological zones. The second section introduces the emotional content of bioregionalism criticism as the construction of a “sense of place”,indicating that bioregionalism’s unique view of place is based on the “bioregion” and incorporates residents’ perceptions of place, deeply rooted in local history and culture. In the third section, the task of bioregionalism is to explore the living pattern in the region, and “re-habitation” is the main practice.By fostering“re-habitation consciousness” and carrying out “green city” projects in cities, bioregionalism achieves the rebalancing of regional ecosystems. In addition, bioregionalist criticism explores the tendency of writers to “re-habit” in the natural and urban environments through textual interpretation. In the fourth section, the ethical goal of bioregionalism criticism inherits the concept of sustainable development from environmental ethics, and establishes a “self-sufficient”survival model in bioregional societies to achieve “sustainable” development of the region and the world. The fourth chapter,“Interpretative Methods of Bioregionalism Criticism”,summarizes the critical methods of bioregionalism by analyzing three types of texts. The first section analyzes the “bioregional culture” embedded in the traditional bioregional texts “Totem Salmon” “The Woman Who Married a Bear”and “the Little Rain”,and explores the interdependence between nature and human beings behind the traditional texts. In the second section, through the interpretation of the migrant texts “Explorer Worth” and “The Human Tree”,we focus on the loss of identity in the process of “re-habitation” in the context of migration. The third section focuses on the unique ecological landscape and the “sense of place and home” in the post-colonial text “The Hungry Road”,revealing the contemporary environmental crisis that squeezes human survival conditions.Chapter 5,“The Value and Limits of Bioregionalist Criticism”.In the first section,we summarize the theoretical value and practical significance of bioregionalism criticism in two aspects: on the one hand, its “bioregional” division and internal way of life are effective explorations to eliminate the global environmental crisis;on the other hand,it promotes the development of ecological premises theory, and the organic combination of the two provides new possibilities for deepening and expanding ecocriticism. On the other hand,it has contributed to the development of ecological premises theory, and the combination of the two has provided new possibilities for deepening and expanding ecocriticism. On the practical level, bioregionalism’s regional ecological restoration construction, and the learning of integrating bioregionalism theory and practice in the educational process are worthy of our country’s reference and absorption. In the second section, its limitations are mainly reflected in the lack of soil for the implementation of bioregionalism under the imbalance of the ecosystem and the limitations of the current critical interpretation of bioregionalism still exist in the text. The sixth chapter is the concluding remarks. The author believes that bioregionalism criticism makes us re-examine the relationship between human and nature and face up to the position of human in nature.Humans need to always keep a reverent heart and strive to create a harmonious society with ecological sustainability.
