For the long-term development of the Belt and Road, nine simulation schemes are designed to explore a method that can accurately assess the wave energy resources in Sri Lankan waters. The study provides data support for alleviating energy crisis, strengthening coastal zone management and accelerating coastal development. The southern Indian Ocean swells spread northwards to Sri Lanka. The swells dominate the mixed waves in the study area.In view of the consideration of components of swells, different nested boundaries were defined. In this paper, nine simulation scheme were ingeniously designed to accurately assess wave energy in Sri Lankan waters.Through comparison and verification, the research found that the nested boundary was set at 30°E-130°E and 70°S-30°N can achieve the full consideration of the swell component;the simulation data had the highest accuracy under that condition. In addition, the study not only proves that the method is rational and correct, but determines the optimal season and enrichment area for the development of wave energy resources.Based on the significant wave height, wave power density and variable coefficient, the main conclusions of this paper are as follows:(1)The regional distribution of wave power density is consistent with the previous research. The power density of the entire simulated waters is exceed 2 k W/m;its maximum value is reach to 14 k W/m.(2)From the perspective of annual spatial distribution, the overall level of the sea areas in the west, south and southeast of Sri Lanka is relatively high;wave energy in that waters are fairly stable. The values of the Gulf of Mannar,Palk Strait and the sporadic sea areas around Sri Lanka are smaller;the wave energy resources in that waters are also unstable.(3)In terms of seasonality and spatiality, the good consistency between wave and swells makes summer with the most abundant and stable wave energy resources. In the summer, the maximum effective storage even reached over 6×10~4k Wh/m;the wave energy contribution rate is as high as 46.56%.
