| This article summarizes and extends Stigler’s philosophy of technology from the perspectives of sociology of technology, procedural science, and critical theory of cultural industry. From the perspective of technological sociology,Stigler holds a transcendental, generalized, mild and optimistic position of technological determinism. From this position,Stigler revised Gill’s technological systems theory and developed the theory of twice interrupted repetition. From the perspective of procedural science,Stigler criticized and revised the contradictions of Leroy Quran procedural theory. On this basis,Stigler expanded the application scope of procedural theory from the fields of biology and anthropology to the fields of existential ontology and pedagogy. From the perspective of critical theory of cultural industry,Stigler criticized Kant’s schema method, which is the foundation of Adorno’s critical theory of cultural industry. He introduced and revised Husserl’s memory theory and established a new critical theory of cultural industry based on it.Stigler did not directly express his own views on technological culture. On the basis of sorting out Stigler’s philosophy of technology from three perspectives, this article summarizes and extends Stigler’s view on technological culture. From the perspective of technological sociology,Stigler’s position of technological determinism and the revision of Gill’s technological systems theory mean that,in Stigler’s view, technology plays a dominant role in the relationship between technology and culture; From the two stages of Stigler’s theory of secondary interruption and repetition, namely technological interruption and secondary interruption and repetition,it can be summarized that technological development has a disruptive effect on cultural traditions and the necessity for culture to adapt to technological development. From the perspective of procedural science,Stigler can conclude from the three levels of theories of technological anthropology, externalization theory and memory, which are inherited and developed from Leroy Quran, that people are not only manufacturing and using technological products, but also manufacturing and producing cultural traditions;Stigler’s analysis of Heidegger’s existential ontology based on the theory of Leroy Quran and the discussion in the field of education show that in the pre industrial era, technology, mainly including "mnemonic" of words and language, was actually the intermediary for the inheritance of history, culture and tradition. However, after entering the industrial era,"mnemonic" transformed into "global mnemonic system",This contemporary form of memory technology poses obstacles to cultural innovation and inheritance. From the perspective of critical theory of cultural industry, through the critical development of Husserl’s memory theory,Stigler proposed the concept of "third memory",which not only implies the viewpoint that technology is a carrier of cultural dissemination, but also indicates that different cultures have different views on the same technology;By absorbing Benjamin’s machine replication theory,Stigler actually emphasized the powerful efficiency of industrial production.Combining this viewpoint with Stigler’s cultural industry theory based on his criticism of Adorno’s cultural industry theory and the development of Husserl’s memory theory,it can be concluded that the powerful efficiency of industrial production will have a serious impact on traditional cultural inheritance methods; At the same time, with the development of globalization, this impact on traditional culture is not only limited to the western world, but also appears in the eastern world. One of the results is that the originally diverse cultures around the world gradually converge in this impact. The result of this convergence is that it becomes difficult to position itself through culture, thus intensifying cultural nihilism, which is also what Stigler calls "the pain of existence".Finally, this article analyzes and evaluates Stigler’s view on technological culture, mainly including a discussion of its theoretical value, practical value, and possible shortcomings.Among them, the review of theoretical value is carried out on the one hand by examining the position of Stigler’s technological and cultural views in his overall ideology, and on the other hand by positioning Stigler in academic history. |
