The research on human settlements in China originated in 1933.Wu Liangyong,Zhou Ganzhi,Lin Zhiqun and others founded human settlements science according to the characteristics of national conditions.Although Chinese scholars had preliminarily improved the relevant theories of suitability evaluation of human settlements, the relevant evaluation system of human settlements was still in the stage of development and exploration, and the development decision-making on the spatial layout of human settlements was still in the blind stage. Therefore, there was a certain research value in constructing the spatial evaluation system of human settlements. This paper analyzed the spatial pattern of human settlements in Guilin and evaluated the current situation of human settlements in Guilin by constructing the suitability evaluation system of human settlements in Guilin. In this study, the suitability evaluation model of human settlements was developed based on GIS technology.Took the residential areas and spatial pattern of Guilin as the research object, firstly, the human settlements index of Guilin was constructed from the four angles of topographic relief, ground cover index, temperature and humidity index and hydrological index, and 10 influencing factors as the index system. Then, used Moran index, residential core density, impact statistical data of topographic elements and evaluation of human settlements index, this paper made a comprehensive analysis on the distribution pattern, aggregation and dispersion characteristics and topographic impact of human settlements in the study area; Finally, selected the data with significant statistical value for analysis and summary, and further put forward the corresponding development countermeasures and suggestions according to the characteristics of human settlements in Guilin. The research conclusions are as follows:(1)In terms of the topographic impact of settlements, the lower valley of the mountain with an altitude of 4m-530 m had the widest distribution of settlements, with a number of 1986.The slope range with the largest distribution of settlements was 0°-10°,with a number of1986.In terms of slope direction, the northern direction had the largest number of settlements, with a number of 1571.Settlements were generally concentrated in the middle of the low latitude valley with a relatively gentle slope, and there was few settlements in the middle mountain and high mountain areas.(2)In terms of the spatial distribution of settlements, there were significant spatial differences in the nuclear density of residential areas in Guilin, with the highest nuclear density intensity of 5.89318/Km~2.The overall spatial characteristics were point distribution,in which the middle,South and northeast were relatively concentrated, and the West and North were relatively sparse. The residential areas in Guilin were obviously affected by the terrain of Xiangjiang River and karst landform. The residential areas were mainly concentrated in low-altitude karst basin areas.(3)In terms of the aggregation of settlements, there was a significant aggregation of urban settlements in the county-level areas around Guilin. There was a significant dispersion in the north and northeast of Guilin, and there was also a significant aggregation of rural settlements in the county-level areas around Guilin.(4)In terms of the suitability of human settlements, the southern boundary of Longsheng ethnic minority autonomous region,Xing’an County and Guanyang county was taken as the dividing line, most of the northern areas were less suitable and unsuitable areas, most of the southern areas of the line were general suitable areas, higher and highly suitable areas, the suitability scores of the areas around the water area were high, and the impact of vegetation on the suitability of human settlements was weak.
