The COVID-19 pandemic that began in late 2019 is a public health event without precedent in human history. In a pandemic like COVID-19,individual action matters. At present, the COVID-19 is still not far away.It is urgent to summarize the successful experience of China in fighting the COVID-19 under the normal situation of individual epidemic prevention behavior and control.Existing research has shown that individuals’ epidemic prevention behavior can be influenced by media use,so this mechanism needs to be answered urgently. Many scholars have studied the relationship between media use and personal behavior. However, few studies have discussed the relationship between vector use and individual epidemic prevention behavior. The mediating effect between vector use and individual epidemic prevention behavior is also less verified in the existing studies. As a result, the relationship between vector use and individual epidemic prevention behavior has not been fully explained. In addition, the measurement of media usage dimensions in existing research results mostly divides new media and traditional media, which can no longer adapt to the current context of media convergence and can not reflect the extension of traditional media in cyberspace. Therefore,it is necessary to study the complex mechanisms of vector use and individual epidemic prevention behavior under COVID-19.This study is based on the Knowledge-Attitude-Belief-Practice Model and Social Cognitive Theory,on this basis,a research model of media use and individual epidemic prevention behavior is constructed. The questionnaire survey data of college students in Hefei and the in-depth interview materials of 10 interviewees are taken as the research samples.Through data analysis, the influence mechanism between media use and individual epidemic prevention behavior is examined, and in-depth interview data is used to further explain the research results. It was found that the media use of college students under the COVID-19 could significantly positively predict the individual epidemic prevention behavior. There are mediating variables between vector use and individual epidemic prevention behavior.Risk perception and epidemic knowledge played multiple mediating roles in media use and individual epidemic prevention behavior. The effect values of different mediating variables were different, and risk perception played a major mediating role.In this influence mechanism,in addition to the difference in the influence produced by different intermediary variables, the study also found that the influence produced by different media channels in risk communication is also different. Therefore,in the case of public health events,we can start from the influence mechanism of media use and individual epidemic prevention behavior, combined with the differentiated communication of media channels,so as to give full play to the effect of media communication, encouraging individuals to take active protection and behavior that is in line with social interest expectations.
