Objectives:This study performed a bibliometric and visualized analysis of the top 100 highly cited articles on rhinoplasty published between 2001 and 2020,to provide researchers with the current research status and the potential directions. Methods:Data were obtained from the Web of Science(WoS)Core Collection database on April 7,2021.Research item:TS=rhinoplasty;retrieval time:2001-2020;index selection:Science citation index-expanded(SCI-E);article type:article, review;language limitation:English.Correlation analysis was performed using SPSS software(version 22.0,IBM,USA)and Pearson's correlation coefficient.Co-occurrence analysis of collaboration networks and keywords was performed using VOSviewer software(CWTS,the Netherlands). Results:The top 100 highly cited articles(TOP100)were all published in 2001-2019,of which 29%were published in 2010 and later;the TOP100 was cited a total of 7728 times, with an average citation frequency of 77 times(range 50-202),with an average citation density of 6(range 3-19);the most cited article(202 times)was published in 2006 by Dean M Toriumi and was the most influential article. The results of correlation analysis showed that citation density, citation frequency in 2019,and citation frequency in 2020 were negatively correlated with the year of publication(respectively:rs=-0.614,p=0.000;rs=-0.263,p=0.008;rs=-0.472,p=0.000).The TOP100 includes 86 publications and 14 reviews, with the most covered topics being surgical technique(n=45,including reconstruction and cosmetic),followed by outcome assessment(n=17),anatomical research(n=12),psychiatric research(n=9);the largest number of study types were case series(n=24),followed by cohort studies(n=12);the largest number of grades of evidence was grade ?(n=24),with only 5 articles at grade of evidence Class ?."cleft lip and palate","FACEQ","FROI-17","NOSE scale","quality of life","questionnaire","RHINO scale" and "ROE" were the most important keywords.TOP100 is published in 24 journals. The journal Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery(PRS)published 49 articles with a total of 4013 citations. The United States publishes the most highly cited articles. The University of Texas published 16 articles with a total of 1,166 citations.Rod J Rohrich has published 14 articles with a total of 1025 citations.Overall,21 funds funded 35 studies.A total of 90 studies were not funded. Conclusion:PRS is the most influential journal in the field of rhinoplasty, and the United States and the University of Texas are the most prolific countries and institutions.Rod J Rohrich is the most popular author in the field of rhinoplasty research.Level ? is the highest level of evidence and includes only 5 RCTs.The concept of retaining rhinoplasty and related surgical techniques, the characteristics of rhinoplasty grafts, and the impact of nasal anatomy on aesthetics and function are recent research hotspots.More highquality studies are needed in the future to evaluate current rhinoplasty outcomes.
