Liquid crystal displays(LCDs)apply widely because of its light weight,small size,low power consumption and long life.However,its color performance is not satisfactory.To improve the color gamut,many researchers and liquid crystal display related technicians have made efforts.In this work,we propose a filter that is used in the backlight unit to widen the color gamut of a LCD.First,the effect of the multilayers thin film filter on the color gamut of LCDs is studied.The filter based on the structure of(HL)~2HS is designed and investigated the effect of the proposed filter on the color gamut of LCDs.When integrated the proposed filter with pc-WLED,KSF-LED and QD backlight,the color gamut of LCDs can be improved by22.6%,14.4%and 7.8%NTSC,respectively.Next,the effect of all-transparent-dielectric Fabry-Perot filter on the color gamut of LCDs is studied.We introduced the structure and principle of Fabry-Perot Interferometer,and the effect of the all-transparent-dielectric Fabry-Perot filter on the color gamut of LCDs is simulated.When integrated the filter with the above three backlights,the color gamut of LCDs can be improved by 24.8%,18.9%and12.8%NTSC,respectively.Finally,the effect of metal-dielectric Fabry-Perot filter on the color gamut of LCDs is studied.When integrated this filter with the above three backlights,the color gamut of LCDs can be improved by 30.6%,21.5%and 15.6%NTSC,respectively.The simulated results show that the optical filter used in backlight is a simple and efficient approach to achieve wide color gamut of LCDs.
