Abstract/Summary:
In the last two seasons of "Rock and Roast",Yang Li’s performance mainly focused on the topic of gender equality. The thesis takes all the performances anchored by Yang Li in those seasons as the research object, trying to answer the question of why there are a considerable number of male audiences who do not feel offended after watching the performance. The thesis uses encoding-decoding theory developed by Stuart Hall as the research framework to analyze the mechanism of the "offensive" narrative in the encoding process of the text, and to explore the narrative construction of male audiences who hold the position of non-confrontational decoding when grasping the meaning of the performance. On the basis of comparing the general process of the above two narratives, the thesis analyzes the change of the male subject position in the process of encoding and decoding, and then clarifies the decoding mechanism of the "forgiving" male audience. The thesis focuses on the transformation from the subject-in-text to the subject-in-society of male audiences holding non-confrontational attitude towards Yang Li’s stand-up comedy performance. It is found that in the process of encoding, the male characters present the characteristics of a "all-mighty man" and are constructed as a "problematic man",or a trouble maker,in the specific narrative structure. With the help of life experience, men who hold the position of nonconfrontational decoding can fully understand the symbolic features in the performance, and leave the position of the "problematic man" with the help of past experience, and become "bystanders" in the narrative of their decoding narrative. The reconstruction of the subject’s position is not only a process of understanding the performance, but also a process of identifying with the value-meaning conveyed by the text.
