Virtual reality(VR) headsets that maintain poor fit for the user's head and face can cause pressure and light leakage problems in the facial interface(FI)areas.For improving the fit of the FIs of VR headsets for Chinese adults and providing VR manufacturers with design guidance,present research firstly measured the eye and face anthropometric data of 2177 head scans from the Chinese 3D head database developed recently.The anthropometric measurements were considered as the objective basis for the facial morphology of Chinese adults.Afterwards,the principal component analysis(PCA)panel for eye and face products were developed covering 96.87% Chinese adult samples,according to the PCA panel method developed by National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health.The samples from the head database were divided into 5 size categories by the differences of eye and face morphology.Based on the mean value of the measurements,the 3D reference headforms represented for five size categories were developed.Then the revised FIs were redesigned and manufactured by the reverse engineering design method and the virtual wearing specification.Consequently,the five revised FIs were obtained.Based on the PCA panel method,the 25 subjects with different facial types were recruited for the fit test of revised and present FIs.And the wearing position was calibrated with high precision between the subjective and objective fit test.In addition,4 size systems and 7 facial areas were considered as the independent variables.And the fit preference,pressure,light leakage,gap distance,interference distance and uniformity were considered as the dependent variables.On the basis of the statistical results of the variables from the fit test,the overall fitness for Chinese adults of the revised FIs' size systems were improved significantly compared to the present FIs.Based on the variables' analysis results of the fit research,the production guidance suggestions of VR headset FIs are obtained,which can make the VR headset FIs produced by future manufacturers more suitable for Chinese adults.
