With the continuous development of IC technology in the field of wireless communications, new applications such as wireless sensor networks have brought new challenges to the reduction of the size of integrated systems. As a result,system-on-chip(SOC)integrated with integrated circuit was born.As an indispensable part of the wireless system, the antenna can be integrated on the chip with the RF circuit through the chip processing technology to reduce the system size and transmission loss between the RF circuit and the antenna. This is Antenna-on-chip(AOC)technology.However,the low-resistivity and high-dielectric-constant silicon substrate of the CMOS process in the AOC technologylimits the improvement of its performance, which also poses a harsh challenge to the design of the integrated on-chip antenna. In this paper, the background and development of the on-chip antennas based on 0.18?m CMOS technology is briefly described, and a general summary of various antenna type of on-chip antenna is also presented. At the same time, this paper introduces the related theory and parameters of antenna in order to lay a good foundation for later design antenna. Then mainly introduces the related theory of the artificial magnetic conductor technique, including surface wave band-gap characteristics as well as reflection phase band-gap characteristics. This paper designs the new “#” type 60 GHz artificial magnetic conductor, simulates and analysis the performance of artificial magnetic conductor when it lies in different sizes and locating in different metal layers. For this artificial magnetic conductor type, the relative bandwidth is more than 26% when its resonance frequency reaches60 GHz.Besides, this paper designs monopole antenna based on artificial magnetic conductor and also compares the radiation performance of the monopole antenna when the artificial magnetic conductor lies on different metal layers and has different period of the structure. In order to further improve the antenna gain, this paper presents the design and performance of a square dielectric resonator fabricated on the top of monopole antenna based on artificial magnetic conductor for the first time, the dimensions of the resonators and assembly errors on antenna performance were studied.Relative to the monopole antenna without artificial magnetic conductor and square dielectric resonator, the gain of monopole antenna based on artificial magnetic conductor and square dielectric resonator increases 2d Bi,radiation efficiency increases by more than 20%,which owns acompetitive advantage in the field of 60 GHz miniaturized on-chip antennas. Finally, the arrangement of artificial magnetic conductor units under the antenna was changed in order to study the effect of the distance between the antenna on-chip and the radio frequency on its performance.Considering the chip size as well as the performance of the antenna on-chip,the TSV structure is used to realize electromagnetism isolation, which enables the monolithic integration of the RF circuit and the antenna on-chip.The antenna system with artificial magnetic conductor and square dielectric resonato r has a size of 0.45 mm × 1.8mm,which is appropriate for portable devices. It is b ased on standard CMOS technology, which means it can be fabricated in low cost, normalization, high precision and high reliability.Simulation results show that it o wns high gain, large bandwidth and small size.It can be used in 60 GHz high spee d wireless transmission, such as full high definition video transmission device and next generation WIFI.
