Inductor-capacitor voltage-controlled oscillators and ring voltage-controlled oscillators are widely used in wireless and wired channel communication scenarios.The progress of integrated circuit technology has promoted development and application of communication systems.The fully integrated voltage-controlled oscillator is a key component of a highspeed and high-performance communication system IC.The bandwidth and phase noise of the oscillator seriously affect the spectrum purity and sensitivity of the communication transceiver.On-chip passive spiral inductors and transformers are important components of oscillators,which suffer from the drawbacks of large silicon consumption,low quality factor(Q value),and non-tunable inductance.In view of above situation,this paper carries out research on the circuit implementation of the integrated oscillator in the IC.The focus will be given to circuit implementation of fully integrated voltage-controlled oscillators employing active inductors and transformers for performance enhancement and cost reduction.The main contents and results of this article are as follows:1.Fully integrated inductor-capacitor voltage-controlled oscillators using active inductors were designed.The active inductor realized by the transistor-level circuit realized the onchip adjustment of the inductance,frequency range and quality factor.The application of a specific active inductor to an inductor-capacitor voltage-controlled oscillator can significantly reduce the silicon consumption,provide a large oscillation frequency range and a high quality factor,and provide a good phase noise performance.2.Fully integrated inductor-capacitor voltage-controlled oscillators with active transformers were designed.The main advantage of active transformers over spiral transformers is the inductance tunability.When the active transformer realized by the transistor-level circuit is applied to the inductor-capacitor voltage-controlled oscillator,the silicon consumption can be effectively reduced.3.Fully integrated ring voltage-controlled oscillators with active inductors were studied.An active inductor ring voltage-controlled oscillator can improve the slope of the output voltage at the threshold intersection and increase the oscillation frequency significantly.4.A new type of tunable active inductor was proposed.The active inductor was based on a gyrator-capacitor network and an auxiliary capacitor was added to compensate for the inductance and to increase the adjustable frequency range.The on-chip adjustment of the inductance value and quality factor was realized by changing the bias conditions.5.A fully integrated voltage-controlled oscillator based on the novel tunable active inductor above was proposed.The simulation and layout design of the proposed fully integrated voltage-controlled oscillator were carried out,and the performance of the circuit was compared with that of similar oscillators in recent years.The fully integrated voltage-controlled oscillator designed in this paper was simulated under the 0.18μm-CMOS process.The results showed that the total power consumption of the oscillator was 20.2m W under a 1.8V supply voltage.The oscillation frequency range was from 0.37 to 2.92 GHz,with a tuning range of 155%.A phase noise of-90.7d Bc/Hz at 1MHz offset frequency was obtained for an oscillation frequency of 1.32 GHz.The total area of the core layout was only 0.51mm×0.45 mm.
