At present,China has seen population aging evolving more rapidly and deeply and growing into a fundamental problem rooted in the societal framework.Against the backdrop of aging society,active aging was promoted as a strategy to tackle aging problems,in which smart media plays the significant part as an important power to advance social development.Therefore,it is of great necessity to observe and study the condition of the elderly people in aspects of smart media using and how it benefits their daily life,in response to the calls for academic research in the field of journalism and communication as well as needs for promoting active aging for the society as a whole.This research chooses the elderly people aged 60 and above in two cities of Shanghai and Dalian as research subjects,aimed at emphasizing the active position old people take in the process of such media adopting as smart phones,short-form videos and social media.In employing quantitative and qualitative research methods,the study is intended to summarize the characteristics of old people's life under mediation,explore whether and how the using of smart media empowers everyday life and self-construal of the elderly,and discuss the power-reduction issues behind media empowerment.This research is divided into six parts:the introduction part shows background,significance and innovations of the study,puts up with directed study questions,subjects and methods,as well as reviewing relevant literature.Chapter one presents how the research is designed and carried out,including framing the questionnaire and interview and determining variables to be calculated.Chapter two reveals statistical analysis on types,frequency and motives of smart media using and the differences within the elderly group on the scale of age,gender and educational levels,through multiple statistical analyzing methods.Chapter three shows research findings concerning characteristics of everyday life under mediation and media empowerment for the elderly people based on the data retrieved from chapter two and interviews.Chapter five comes to the theoretical conclusion and the final part reflects on the imperfections in the research and possible angles of view for academic study in the future.This research has collected 570 valid samples through questionnaires with SPSSAU processing and analyzing,while interviews with 10 old people have been carried out in the meantime.The daily life of the elderly group has characteristics of mediation in the aspects of contact,leisure and life service.There are significant differences in the use of smart media among the old people according to age and educational level.Empowerment by the use of smart media can be classified into four types:resource empowerment,emotion empowerment,relation empowerment,and image empowerment.The paper suggests it is one of the effective ways to promote elderly-oriented transformation in the community that the elderly aged 60 to 69 with bachelor's degree and above can be chosen as Key Opinion Leader among the old people,so as to influence and persuade others into using and living with smart media through interpersonal communication.The paper also finds out the power-reduction phenomenon,for instance,the rise of emotional threshold,which may provide new perspectives for further study.
