Research On Project-based Learning Of High School Chemical Experiment Under STEAM Approach

Abstract/Summary:
This study adopts the STEAM Education approach to carry out high school chemistry experiment project-based learning(PBL)and to sort out preliminary discussion,by applying the literature review method,quasi-experimental research method,investigation method and other relevant research methods.The textbook of High School Standard Chemistry Curriculum(2017 edition)has been implemented for over three years.The textbook focuses on improving core competencies and values for Chinese student.Its purpose is to lay the foundation for future national talents in all walks of life.STEAM Education is a new educational approach that uses Science,Technology,Engineering,the Arts and Mathematics as access points to learning multi-disciplinary subjects for guiding student inquiry,dialogue,and critical thinking,and plays a positive role in promoting quality education for citizens.PBL is a student-centered pedagogy that involves a dynamic classroom approach in which it is believed that students acquire a deeper knowledge through active exploration of real-world challenges and problems,so as to improve their core competencies.In recent years,teachers and researchers have been exploring methods to carry out PBL activities based on the STEAM education approach for high school chemistry experiment lectures.Many scholars at home and abroad have explored the PBL in other disciplines based on the STEAM Education approach,but there are few studies on high school chemistry experiment teaching methods.Therefore,this study makes exploration based on the previous studies of other disciplines and chemistry specialty.First of all,through literature review and data research,this paper combs the relevant research on the integration of the STEAM Education and PBL to understand its background at home and abroad.Basing on the above research,the paper proposes the PBL method and plans for high school chemistry experiment lectures under STEAM Education approach.Secondly,this paper aims to apply the PBL in high school chemistry experiment under the STEAM approach to two classes(Class 1 and Class4)of a high school’s first-year students,so as to implement teaching activities.Based on the interviews with chemistry teachers in high school and the questionnaire survey of the experimental class,this paper puts forward some solutions and then designs teaching mode combined with the relevant teaching theories and the PBL elements.According to the High School Standard Chemistry Curriculum and teaching mode,three chemical experiment project teaching activities based on the STEAM approaches are designed.Through the detection of learning effect and evaluation of activities,it is found that the STEAM education approach integrates the advantages of PBL in high school chemical experiment,which can effectively promote students’ in-depth learning and cultivate critical thinking;help students achieve self-learning and self-education,so to improve learning efficiency;help students cultivate core competencies and form correct values.Finally,some suggestions are put forward to solve problems: high schools should foster and develop a PBL system for chemistry experiment;high school teachers should change their lecture-designed methods and actively promote curriculum reform as experimental teaching emphasizes students’ learning autonomy.At the same time,this paper puts forward some ideas about the compilation of teaching materials and the development of experimental teaching resources.
