English picture books have rich pictures,interesting language,and unique reading value.With the continuous deepening of curriculum reform,the traditional teacher-led classrooms,the "full-filled" and "cramming" reading teaching models can no longer meet the current needs.Therefore,teachers should develop and use new teaching models in teaching,to promote students’ subjective initiative,give full play to their"little master" status in the classroom,and truly realize the subject of students and the leading role of teachers.ESA teaching mode,as a new type of teaching model,was proposed by the famous British educator Jeremy·Harmer,which is divided into three elements:engage,study,and activate.According to these three elements,three types of courses are formed:Straight Arrows Sequence、Boomerang Sequence and Patchwork Sequence.The teaching model of ESA emphasizes that in specific teaching,the proportion of the three elements should be adjusted at any time according to the learning situation and mastery of the students.It is flexible and changeable,highlighting the dominant position of students,and can meet the specific classroom needs.Therefore,it is of great significance to construct the teaching mode of reading picture books in primary school based on ESA teaching mode.This paper starts from the theoretical level,through the research on English picture books and reading teaching by domestic and foreign scholars,and combines the three types of ESA teaching models,it designs from the dimensions of teaching goals,teaching difficulties and teaching processes,and presents how to use ESA teaching model to teach English picture books.Secondly,analyze teaching cases,observe students’ classroom behavior,and conduct questionnaires and interviews with students and teachers from a primary school in Yanta District,Xi’an,to learn about students’reading interests,reading habits,reading skills,and teachers’ views.Finally,based on the research results,this paper analyzes the role of ESA teaching model in promoting students ’reading literacy and improving students’ core literacy in English,and attempts to put forward suggestions for improvement from the perspectives of teaching objectives,teaching design,teaching content,teaching tools,etc.The specific contents of this study include,the first chapter introduction,namely the research purpose and significance,research methods,research ideas,core concepts and literature review.The second chapter is the connotation and theoretical basis of ESA teaching model.This paper analyzes the contents and three types of teaching model of ESA,and analyzes the feasibility and relevance of ESA teaching model from the perspectives of input hypothesis theory,output hypothesis theory and learning motivation theory,so as to lay a foundation for the teaching of reading picture books in primary school English using ESA teaching mode.The third chapter is the specific construction and case analysis of the three types of courses under the ESA teaching model.The types are the specific application of the Straight Arrows Sequence,the specific application of the Boomerang Sequence,and the specific application of the Patchwork Sequence.The fourth chapter is the implementation and effect analysis of picture book reading teaching under ESA teaching model.Through the analysis of students’ questionnaires,interviews with students and teachers and teaching cases,the teaching effect of ESA teaching model was verified.The fifth chapter is a summary and reflection,which introduces the role of ESA teaching model in the reading teaching of English picture books in primary schools,and puts forward some suggestions from the perspective of specific teaching.This research is only a glimpse,aiming to shed light on the jade,hoping to make some reference ideas for the development of primary school English picture book reading teaching research.
